"Shattered Glass"
Anyone who hasn't seen the movie by that title should rent it ASAP. It sheds a lot of light on today's hottest subject on DU.

1. GREAT movie!
I've watched it a few times, and find it compelling each time.

You're right - it's the perfect DU Movie Of The Week for this time. Absolutely.

Good call, SB.

4. Thanks.
The movie was also my first exposure to Peter Sarsgaard who played the editor who systematically unraveled the hoaxes perpetrated by Stephen Glass. Sarsgaard impressed me as a very intriguing actor who is going to go places in his career.

3. Great movie...I saw it in the theatre and own the
DVD. Shows you what people will do just to get ahead and how easy it is to con people, even the New Republic(an)

6. And how his colleagues - those good kids -
stood by him and defended him in every way, even when it was obviously irrational?

Ah, yes. Sound familiar?

I should buy that DVD, come to think of it.

5. Great film
I still can't understand how that kind of thing can happen. He literally got away with making stuff up for years.

7. Have you read about Leopold's "career"?
I am still wondering why truthout had anything to do with him at all. A true liar, plagiarist, just everything wrong with the guy. In spades.

8. Sadly this whole Truthout affair
Edited on Tue Jun-13-06 09:55 PM by dsc
has brought forth the whole sordid story. I am really beginning to wonder just what vetting reporters get before getting jobs. I know that it isn't teaching but I would think that some amount of backround check should be done.

9. And it's all online!
That's what makes it even more bizarre. Leopold's history is online - sorry, but I don't have the link.

I think the basics would be in order, yeah.

11. I can understand wanting to believe things
but there really should be some limit. I could have seen Fitz going to either neutral ground or even Rove's firm if need be but for 14 hours? This story had a lot of holes from the get go. I just hope Fitz made the right decision here in not indicting Rove.

12. It involves a lot of wishful thinking and cognitive dissonance.
Some are more susceptible to it than others. Which is why I think this would be a good film for those still wondering about the TO thingy to see.

10. Sounds like a great movie
"This film tells the true story of fraudulent Washington, D.C. journalist Stephen Glass (Christensen), who rose to meteoric heights as a young writer in his 20s, becoming a staff writer at "The New Republic" for three years (1995-1998), where 27 of his 41 published stories were either partially or completely made up. Looking for a short cut to fame, Glass concocted sources, quotes and even entire stories, but his deception did not go unnoticed forever, and eventually, his world came crumbling down..."

I think I need to watch that for sure.
