Medical advice - quick please!!!!
My SO was stepping into the shower and the bath mat slipped. He hit the side of his shin HARD on the tub (enamel/iron tub) and a massive swelling occurred within 5 minutes. I could see it from across the room when he came out! He is going to an important dinner meeting (investment broker) and I'm worried that it might be something bizarrely serious. He thinks he just needs a bandage or something. Any advice before he leaves????

Thank you!!!

1. If he's dizzy or feels sick to his stomach...
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 02:50 PM by Virginia Dare
call 911. I would suggest he go to the ER for evaluation anyway, bad raps on the head are not things to play with.

8. It's on his leg
The side of his shin. All I can think about is phlebitis or something.

2. Amputate!
Seriously, without a medical professional examining his leg, you're not going to be any further ahead.

Nothing you're going to get here is going to be the least bit useful.

3. Cold to stop/reduce the swelling
I wouldn't bind it. Hopefully it's just badly bruised but he really should get an xray. Can he walk all right?

He could have a fracture or any number of problems, which would screw up his big dinner in a big way.

7. RICE - Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation
Edited on Wed Jun-14-06 02:57 PM by eShirl
ice or cold-pack on it for 20 minutes at a time, repeat as needed

edit: wait, you said he thinks he only needs a bandage -- he's bleeding???!

You should probably get advice from someone qualified to make a medical diagnosis, who can see it in person. I'm just some dumbass on the internet.

10. This advice is from the Red Cross First Aid recommendations:
Bruises and sprains
If a bruise or sprain has caused significant swelling and pain, if you can't move the affected body part, or if a joint/bone looks misplaced, have it evaluated by a medical professional to be sure there's no break. Treat bruises and sprains with the RICE formula used for sports injuries: Rest, Ice, Compression (an Ace bandage), Elevation.

11. check this site out -
http://www.webmd.com/

I am not a dr/nurse (nor did I stay in a holiday inn last night - :) ) but massive swelling in 5 minutes can be an indicator of something serious - have him at least ice it for a bit (ice will help the swelling go down). Do you have a regular dr you can call for advice?

12. Get thee to an ER and get an Xray
because there's a distinct possibility of a hairline fracture. Those can develop into something worse if the bone isn't immobilized.

Please contact your medical provider. An internet message board about Political Issues is not an appropriate place to ask for this advice.
