You couldn't convince American's to go into an imperialistic war but.....
it's been relatively easy to con Americans into a faux patriotic war with imperialistic goals. Even I went for it to begin with. We had to bomb someone to show our strength after 9-11. (Almost veryone agrees with attacking Afghanistan because, of course, "Everything changed after 9-11"))
Then they morphed Emmanuel Goldstein into Bin Laden into Mullah Omar into Saddam into Zarqauwi into......
