Oooops, NPR - burgers are reason teens don't like stick shifts anymore!
NPR's piece this AM on the demise of standard shift cars, interviewed a teen. She suggested that one reason teens don't like stick shifts anymore is that they are too hard to drive while talking on a cell phone , and anyway, they are probably trying to eat an "in and out burger"!

OMG, the FCC indecency fine for that will probably halve the federal deficit!

And they're good.

4. Makes sense to me.
I drive a stick shift, and there's no way I can talk on the phone or eat a burger while driving. Not supposed to be doing that stuff anyway because they're distractions. I'd force my teenager to drive a standard for that very purpose. They CAN'T do anything else while driving, keeps them more alert.

5. I prefer a stick
but I had to get an automatic this time, because my wife can't drive a stick. I love my little Kia Rio5, but it would be more fun with a 5-speed. Actually, the automatic in this car (and the Scion xA) gets better highway MPG than the stick due to taller gearing, so I do get that benefit. I still miss being able to wind up and attack some twisties...just isn't the same with a slushbox.

Ah well....

6. Hey, it's easy if you just steer with your knees...
and only take bites when you don't have to shift.

You can talk on your cell phone AND eat a burger while driving that way.

:sarcasm:

8. I put the phone down and shift while the other person is talking
Then pick the phone back up and say "oh really?" or "gol-darner" or the even less committal "huh."
It lets them feel they have gotten a word in edgewise.

9. I don't drive a stick because my right hand is useless
I'm one of those left handers that have little to no coordination in my right hand. Knowing this, I have no interest in ever driving a stick shift.

As for this article, I think it's an absurd assumption. Stick shifts are harder to learn and it seems like most people drive automatics these days. If you're a teenager and your parents own an automatic, then that's what you tend to drive.

When I was a teenager, my driving school had only one stick shift to practice on so the students would have to sign up and wait a week or two just to learn. When you're extremely excited to finally finish driving school, you don't want to wait any longer than you have to.
