Photos: Inside Foxconn's "iPod City"

A pair of photos published earlier this week by the UK's Mail on Sunday appear to portray substandard work environments within Chinese manufacturing facilities that build versions of Apple Computer's popular iPod digital music players.

1. No offense, but those pictures could be anything
I'm not defending Apple or making any other comment about the veracity of the Foxconn charges, I'm just pointing out that there is nothing that identifies these pictures what it is we're actually looking at. Could be a Chinese prison farm for all I know. Foxconn is a big company and makes products for a lot of United States companies. EVERY ONE OF THEM should be pressuring Foxconn if there is indeed proof of the charges. It isn't just Apple's doing!

2. Foxconn, Quanta, and Compal.... are the big three
I tried making this point the other night that many US manufacturers use these contract assembly plants and that I personally knew of only one major computer manufacturer that didn't - Dell. Bottom line, the argument that using these services is the only way for a company to be profitable is hog-wash. If the #1 computer manufacturer in the world can be profitable without overseas contract assembly houses, so can the others.

4. The investor class might make less money
Until US workers stand up for foreign workers, we're all at risk of ending up just like this. Immigration isn't the issue, labor exploitation is the issue.

8. Last I knew, Dell used Compal
for laptop manufacturing, as did HP Compaq. Dell has used Quanta and Samsung as well, and supposedly will be dealing with Asus. The Dell Inspiron 5000e was a Compal N30 series, for example.

3. While the pictures may be entirely genuine...
...The Mail on Sunday (together with it's sister paper The Daily Mail) is rightwing tabloid trash. It's always trying to stir up some outrage or other among 'Little Englanders' and the Conservative-voting members lower middle-class. Whatever it says has to be taken with an enormous pinch of salt.

5. May be??
Excuse me, are people really so naive or uninformed as to not know this has been happening for YEARS. I'm shocked at the responses to this. This is what comes of trade laws with no labor regulations. This and the environmental damage. It isn't tabloid trash. It's real trash, US trash all over China and the rest of the world.

7. Actual quote from the prez of my old company...
...which was in the same line of business as Apple:

"Our factories aren't sweatshops! They have air conditioning!"
