WHITE HOUSE WATCH
Polls bolster Bush on domestic spying
Position reversal on hearings could be linked to public ambivalence on wiretapping issue

WASHINGTON - In a noteworthy reversal, President Bush last week said he would welcome congressional hearings on whether he was legally in bounds to allow spying on Americans without obtaining search warrants first.

...

As a rule, the White House does not invite congressional meddling on any subject. But Bush's about-face can be traced to at least two strategic considerations.

First, polls have shown that the public doesn't care all that much about the program, which permits domestic wiretapping of phone calls and e-mail without first obtaining a court order.

...

Another key factor in Bush's thinking was the performance last week of prominent Democratic senators in Samuel Alito's Supreme Court nomination hearings.

In the days leading up to the hearings, White House spokesman Scott McClellan repeatedly issued warnings that Bush was expecting dignified proceedings.

1. Actually . . .
Buzzflash is posting a Zogby poll that found that 53% of Americans support impeaching the president over the wiretapping . . .

What's up with that?

Oh, and this is rich:

"Scott McClellan repeatedly issued warnings that Bush was expecting dignified proceedings."

A drunken buffoon expects others to be dignified . . .

2. How can people be so incredibly stupid.
Oh George would never abuse his power on innocent people! He would never spy on his political enemies to keep the upper hand. Dignified proceedings my ass. The Dems had better grow a spine on this one.

8. It's the old and stupid....
...."if you don't have anything to hide, you have nothing to worry about". I bet Germans in Hitler's early days thought the same thing.

3. Push polls don't mean squat.
Has America gone completely stupid? I don't need to repeat the questions being asked on polls. Most of us on DU understand their slant and bias. "Excuse me, Ms./Mr. American, do you want bush to eavesdrop on a member of Al Queda who has filled out an application and hates your freedom?"

McClellan is now issuing "warnings"? Someone send the man a brown shirt.

4. Here's the link to the story on the poll
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/01/10/AR2006011001192.html

I'm not so sure this reporter has carefully characterized the findings of this study. More aptly, it should be said that support for these types of policies falls along party lines.

5. Dems haven't controlled any news. That changes starting tomorrow
first with Gore's speech and ending up with Conyer's hearings.

The public goes with the news it has.

6. when the question was spying on americans, people opposed.
they changed the question a couple weeks ago to do you oppose bush spying on terrorist without a warrant. you are right, people dont care. when it comes out the people bush spied on was not terrorists, but journalist, political opponents, and activists then the people will care. but again, the media changed the subject line
