Last night's Coulter appearance on Leno was "surreal"
it appears NBC pulled out all the stops in supplying her with a friendly audience.

George Carlin appeared to really work on restraining himself.

That must have been quite a deal Coulter negotiated with NBC.

1. I agree.
She had her own cheering section and Carlin restrained himself. I know he really wanted to tell that skinny broad off!

2. Unfortunately I didn't see it.
Maybe they paid the audience to hold back. Or they asked political affiliation at the door.

Too bad Carlin just didn't verbally smack the snot out of her.

She must have given out tickets to her friends.

10. Nope, post earlier on here to Freepsville. That's who supplied
the blood drinkers. If you have the fortitude, you can search here, I only go there for a quick laugh!

I have never watched the wicked witch, but last night I was turning off the tv and for some reason NBC was on and I stayed up later than usually because IT was on.

Then for some reason, I was reminded of Stephen Kings "Thinner"!.

I actually feel somewhat sorry for Annie, cause the organ damage suffered by anorexics is severe, but I guess, if you dance with the devil, the devil always collects his dues!

Coulter acts like she is so tough, & yet she's afraid of Carlin! She's just like most neocons--she says all her mean-spirited crap, & yet she won't say it directly to a Democrat's face. Again, she is a *wimp*! Probably because she's so skinny that the Democrat would beat the hell out of her!

9. FReepers boasting about it. Jay Leno is an ass. I miss Johnny.
FReepers loaded the audience; all over their site. Jay Leno has always sucked up to the Right; check his anti-lawyer (plaintiff) shtick 10 or more years ago. Johnny Carson would never, ever have tolerated Ann Coulter's hatred, and it went beyond politics with him. I think he was a Republican. One with a conscience; you know, the kind that are long dead and gone. I miss Johnny.

12. Yes, he was... but regardless, he would never have let Coulter on...
He certainly never came across as a partisan, but rather an equal opportunity spear thrower, as a comedian. But, he was a gentleman and I know he would be appalled at what has become of "common courtesy" and political discourse--especially on the show which will always be his legacy.

22. We are all in the same camp. We miss Johnny.
Johnny had class. Jack Benny had class. Danny Kaye had class. Richard Pryor had class (imperfect). Rodney had class. Jay Leno has never had class. He had his chance here, and he blew his legacy. Years before this, admittedly, but most certainly now. Johnny would neve have had her on. And she would not have wanted to go on with Johnny.

I met Johnny when I was 7. He was the first man I ever fell in love with. I have a signed photograph of him and he wrote "Wish you were 25 years older beautiful, Love Johnny." The entire band and stage hands were fabulous but it was JC who was the man.

If only I had been 25 years older...sigh.... Johnny never would have allowed Annorexic step foot on his set. Doc would have spilled his drink on her if she dared.

14. I don't think Jon Stewart will have her
on his show. Brian Lamb no longer will have her as a guest on CSPAN. (He had her as a guest in the past.) Aaron Brown refused to have her on his show -- when he had one on CNN. And I believe Bill Mahr has decided to no longer feature her on his show. And they were good friends at one point. But she hasn't appeared on his HBO show.
So. There are people with standards.
It's sickening that MSM would feature this horrid woman. The entertainers and newspersons of the past would have berated any staffer who even brought up a name like Coulter as a possible guest.
There have been Coulters in the past. She's nothing new. It's just that the former Lenos and Lauers didn't showcase the lunatics and hate-spewers.
We've really fallen. Coulter is just another sign.

37. I hate their tactic
of having on a loathsome guest and then acting all smug and self righteous. Lauer got to act like he was a tough guy with Coulter -- by merely repeating her own words and then acting incredulous that anyone would utter such idiocy. He acted as though he didn't know, before her appearance, what a hate-filled bag of bones she is. Lauer was so superior. So offended for us all.
What a media stunt. What a whore.
She should never have been a guest. Next up, Klan members, unrepentant pedophiles, wife beaters, and Nazis.
And Matt acting all holier than thou.

46. It would be interesting, though, to see
what Jon would do with her as a guest. He's such a gentleman. But still manages to eviscerate the pompous. Poor Bill Bennett. He just looked goofy and dumb. And O'Reilly and Newt tried so hard to get into the cool vibe of Jon's show that they both missed pathetically. It was cringe-worthy.
I think people get lulled by Stewart's demeanor. And don't realize until it's too late how silly, bigoted, unimformed...and just plain uncool they appeared.
I don't think Jon will have her as a guest. He has standards that apparently Lauer and Leno do not.
And it's good luck for Coulter that he won't. That's a show that would be on the internet forever - her disgrace played over and over.

And find some way to ask celebrities to do the same thing (in other words, don't go on his show as a guest). Coulter shouldn't be allowed to get away with what she is doing. I'm sick & tired of these neocon bullies. I think it's time for us to stand up to them, big time.

25. Well I wouldn't go that far...
But I would say it seemed pretty obvious that she brought along her posse, and they parked their bony asses in the audience, cheering wildly at every one of her foul smelling utterances. It was certainly not a typical Leno crowd. Even he made a crack about the right wingers sitting in the audience, during his monologue when they turned on him after one of his jokes. As for Carlin...I think he kept quiet because he may have felt Jay was trying to pit him against Coulter, as though the two were gladiators in the Roman Coliseum. I think George felt a little set up, and a little uncomfortable with that.

IMO.

26. first time I'd watched Leno in a LONG time...
Even before Leno got all school-girly for Ahnold and showed himself to be either a Republican or willing Republican stooge, I stopped watching for the simply reason that he's not funny.

Whenever I'd watch, I knew every single punchline when he simply broached a topic! He's just a lazy comedian: everything is predictable and by-the-book. He goes for the cheap but "harmless" laugh--ie. all of his Clinton jokes: yes we get that Clinton likes the ladies, now come with some new material, you ass.

I think he's just so scared that he might offend someone, that he doesn't try to actually come up with anything new and sticks to well-worn, safe territory. But that also makes him a willing doormat for the likes of Coulter, as he's too afraid to actually question her statements and "just want's to be nice."

I think the "essence" of Carson was displayed when he had Kreskin on and the idiot started making excuses as to why he couldn't do any of his mind tricks (Carson had made sure that none of Kreskin's people got near the props), and Carson just let him squirm; whereas that of Leno can be seen with the Coulter and Ahnold episodes: hey, we're all friends, right? Come on my show, we'll have a nice time and a nice chat!

48. Good analysis, progdonkey. Leno is like the ultimate people-pleaser...
Carson used to get that edge, that devilish twinkle in his eye, and he would use humor to hang someone (figuratively, of course).

I long ago checked out of the late-night chat shows. Carson really took that with him.

51. "ultimate people-pleaser"
Something else that I think also contributes to his being a willing or just unwitting Republican stooge in addition to his apparent natural inclination to play it safe and not really offend someone is his willingness to please the corporate brass. I remember my dad telling me after the whole Leno-Letterman-Tonight Show thing that it was no surprise that NBC would give the show to Leno, because Leno had always been willing to do anything the brass at NBC asked of him, whereas Letterman would never stop complaining about them on his show.

Like, if NBC needed some sort of promotional thing done, they'd ask Jay to do some little show in some podunk town, and he'd say, "Sure, no problem." It is an admirable work ethic: instead of bitching about being sent all over the place, he went where his bosses wanted him to, and he was rewarded for his hard work and willingness to go anywhere.

The problem is that I think he's taken it to too much of an extreme, so now when the brass says to give Ann Coulter a platform to spew her filth on his show, he says, "Sure, no problem."

And thanks for the compliment! :loveya:
