story behind layoffs at my company
23 people laid off this week. I work for a company that manufactures large diesel engines and sells them to the DOD or whoever. Apparently they signed a contract on some of these which required that they buy european parts made by certain manufacturers. The dollar is weaker against the euro than it was when they signed the contract so the company turned out a couple of million dollar products with no margins at all.

Future contracts will hopefully be more realistic or the company will shut down.

1. It Begins.
The consequences owing to the weakness of the Dollar begins to be felt. The pain will only grow worse.

3. So, what I want to know is,
if this is a DOD contract, why is it required that some of the parts be made by European manufacturers? A rational person (like most of us) would think a government contract would require American made parts, unless Europe is the only place these parts can be found.

5. I'm really not sure about that part
There are not that many makers of 1500 horsepower per cylinder diesel engines- the makers are all over the world, and this company has a history of working with them because some of the designs they we are actually german or swedish. Its worked for them for a long time to do it this way (they make certain parts/we assemble and make the rest) but apparently this was a real miscalculation.

4. Sorry to hear that.
Layoffs are hard on everyone involved. When the dollar is worthless, what will we use to pay off our national debt? Indenture?

I'm having this vision of Bush and his PNAC pals as little vandals smashing up a huge candy store. They could have as much candy as they can stuff themselves with, but that's not good enough. Greed knows no bounds. And the rest of humanity just looking on in horror, or playing with the broken glass and thinking this is just grand.

Feeling morose tonight.
