Texas utility to cut off 1000 soldiers' power (Base unable to pay bills)
Something is seriously wrong here. Maybe we need more tax cuts.

CPS Energy Sends Over 1,000 Cutoff Notices to Fort Sam Houston

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Fort Sam Houston has received 1,300 utility service termination notices for delinquent bill payments, which officials blamed on a major budget shortfall.

CPS Energy warned commanders at the post to pay $4.2 million by Wednesday or risk losing power. The post is three months behind on its bills, but both Army and utility officials said the two parties were talking and no cutoff was imminent.

"Who would imagine us not paying our bill?" said Col. Wendy Martinson, Fort Sam Houston's garrison commander. "I worry about it. I can't sleep at night."

The post, which trains medics, faces a $26 million budget shortfall this year - a problem that officials said is symptomatic of the financial woes facing posts worldwide.

3. "The wheels are coming off the US Army."
Who said that last year? Ironically, a cousin of mine was the C/O of the Texas Army Guard (a major general) based at Ft. Sam Houston, a few years back. He agrees.

More ironically, our common great-great-great uncle (Mirabeau Bonaparte Lamar) was Sam Houston's #2 (VP) when the Republic of Texas was formed. And GWB probably is clueless that my direct ancestor was the second president of the Republic of Texas!

11. He carved his name in a dining table at one of our ranches
in N Central Texas (Bosque County).

One of our original Spanish Land Grants.

Quanah Parker (the last Cherokee war chief) is also buried there.

30. I am from N. Central Texas
Does that ranch have a historical landmarker by the road where a hill (with the gravesite) is visible just a few hundred yards beyond the fence? I think I have driven by that ranch dozens of times...even stopped by the road and went up the hill to the landmark. I can't remember the Native American's name that was buried there (been years), but I think it was Quannah Parker.

If it was your ranch...sorry....I tresspassed, but it was 20 years ago, and I didn't make a mess.

35. no.
and i don't know...

but- one of my favourite scenes in "king of the hill" is when they're at a texas veteran's cemetary, and go past the crypt marked "stephen austin"- bobby asks hank: "is that the bionic man, or the wrestler?"

26. Yeah, the opposite of Houston on Indian policy.
As I recall the presidency went back and forth between them on this very issue, short terms, really f-d up relations with the Cherokee and others.

Houston actually ran away from home and became Cherokee when he was 16. Weird story. Today history tends to gloss over the Indian wars in Texas, it's all about the Alamo.

15. I would imagine that is the total owed by the base.
The utility rates are bundled for the entire base, including on-base housing.

So guess who gets screwed?

28. All the services are having similar problems
Because this misAdministration refuses to budget for their war, they only submit "supplemental" requests to cover the costs. What that means is if Congress holds off on giving the $98B they ask for to keep their war on, the costs to fight have to come out of the budgeted dollars that are supposed to pay for normal operations, like pay, rent, and utilities. Literally, they are robbing Peter to kill Abdul.

This has been going on the whole time, but this year the Senate has balked and wants the war in the budget. It's all sleight-of-hand by the Pentagon and when coupled with the base closing costs (BRAC), the grunts and their families are going to be squeezed when it comes to trying to live day-to-day.

:sarcasm: And how many billions have gone "missing" in Iraq? I guess what I'd like any lurking FReeps to tell me, is how they can still support their president and their congressional leaders who are spending like crazy and only supporting the ultra wealthy and the mega corporations? GOP=Party of fiscal responsibility is bullshit!
