WASHINGTON - Iraq’s prisons are overrun by Shiite Muslim militias who abuse and kill inmates, and Iraqi officials have asked the US to suspend the transfer of prisons and prisoners to Iraqi control, The Washington Post said on Friday, quoting a senior Iraqi official.

“We cannot control the prisons. It’s as simple as that,” said Deputy Justice Minister Pusho Ibrahim Ali Daza Yei, an ethnic Kurd. snip

Dayni said he saw many as 120 detainees were packed into a 10.5-by-12-meter (35-by-20-foot) cell. “They told us that they’ve been raped.”

“Their families were called in and tortured to force the detainees to testify against other people,” he added.
