Dan Rather confirms he'll leave CBS, at request of network execs
USA Today: Dan Rather will leave CBS after 44 years
Updated 6/15/2006
By Peter Johnson, USA TODAY

Dan Rather, who stepped down as anchor of The CBS Evening News 15 months ago in the wake of the Memogate scandal, said Thursday that he'll soon leave the network after 44 years — at the request of network executives.

"They wanted this resolution, and I'm willing to accept that and move on," said Rather, 74, whose contract expires in November.

Rather had been a correspondent for 60 Minutes since leaving his anchor chair on the Evening News in March 2005. Eight of his stories aired last season — far fewer than many of his colleagues' stories.

Former Today star Katie Couric is set to anchor the Evening News in September and contribute to 60 Minutes along with CNN's Anderson Cooper. And with younger CBS correspondents such as Lara Logan and Scott Pelley also vying for time on 60 Minutes, executives have said that CBS wants to usher in a new look and feel for the top-rated newsmagazine.

In an interview Thursday, Rather said he had planned to stay at CBS for the rest of his career....

3. CBS Sucks! Favoring "a new look" over real journalism
Are they going to do away with Charles Osgood on Sunday mornings also?

8. Damn, johnfunk!
You beat me to it.

So much for CBS "News."

On the bright side, Katie Couric won't last long, and CBS, desperate to get its ratings up, will probably go the topless news route.

Sure, we still won't be getting the news, but a little T & A is better than nothing.

:sarcasm:

5. Ruthless...
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 08:24 AM by hlthe2b
At a time when people are living healthy longer and MOST will not be in a position to retire at 65 or perhaps ever, our society is witnessing this devaluation of experience, wisdom, and blatant ageism. We've always had it with women professionals in the news biz, but now white men are getting it. Does not bode well...

7. I blame Katie for this. She didn't want the Rather any where near
her kingdom.

11. Get set for emotional background music and flashy graphics
60 Minutes has been an oasis of straight journalism among the Carnival Side Show that is modern TV news.

But the Wores of Viacom -- encouraged by the WHORES of Washington who enable Corporate Media -- will undoubtedly want to make it like that bastioon of tabloid sleaze 48 Hours and Dateline NBC,

13. Too bad Murrow's ghost is gone from CBS
and we now have another US Pravda to go along with all the others. I think this is where democracy has been lost. The liars get to tell the news and all is wrong with America and it's joke, "land of the free".

14. Ironic. He's been "Cronkited".
I have mixed feelings about Rather but this pretty much ends my (minimal) reliance on CBS for "news gathering".

It will be interesting to see if Kimberly Dozier ever returns to CBS. I consider her better anchor material than Hatie-Katie Choleric.

15. Kenneth! What is the frequency???
I will miss Dan Rather. That guy was so tightly wound up, I always had the impression that he knew the answers to all the conspiracies of recent American history and that at any point he would just stop his broadcast and spilling the beans and telling people to go to their windows and scream, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

Either that, or he would tell us the frequency.
