As a student of history, I don't see this as making a truly major difference one way or the other.
Will a Democratic win/majority:
Revitalize American manufacturing? Nope. The slippery slope of corporate globalization will continue to rape the next victim. When Korea and China get pricey, then the new label will read: "Made in Vietnam" or somewhere else.
Stop Global Warming? Nope. The moment a Democratic Congress puts limits on CO2 that the Republicans can capitalize on, it will be back to "business as usual" so fast you will think life is a DVD on reverse scan.
End the war in Iraq? Nope. That debacle is scheduled for another five years at least, no matter what visionaries like Congressman Murtha say.
Put the bastards in jail? Nope. The Presidential Pardon is not negotiable, and we will NEVER nail Bush. Just ain’t happening.
Fix Healthcare? Nope. Give me a break. When was the last time YOU heard the phrase "National Healthcare?" Right.
A Democratic Majority is like putting a bandaid on an amputated leg. The changes required are so major as to be almost impossible without an economic catastrophe like a depression. Can we make the landing softer than a crashing 747 with a full fuel load? Sure. WILL we? Maybe.
In the economic picture, the United States has become like the Company President who got fired, but is using credit to keep up appearances and is hoping for the best. The country needs its credit cards yanked and cut up before its very eyes the very next time it hits the Mall of Nations for a shopping spree.
Will this hurt? Of course. Is it necessary? Without question. The thing that makes this absolutely necessary is that if it does not happen, the crash will be so catastrophic as to make 1929 look like "the good old days." Along with that sort of nonsense goes things like the "Committee for Public Safety" ala the French Revolution, and the COMINTERN ala Russia, neither of which is my idea of a day at the zoo, unless your concept of fun includes a picnic with the tigers. You bring lunch.
Time for the tough answers to the difficult questions. Time for the debate to wander away from abortion and the flag to survival of the Nation as a whole. If not, all bets are off. Personally, I’ll find a way to not even play in that case.
