If a kid said something like Larry did, I'd be horrified and counsel against it. I'd explain that it's a meaningless and unnecessary cruelty. I'd say it's likely to cause injury beyond its intended target, that there are far more constructive pursuits, and I'd probably say something about our better angels.

As for the political pragmatism behind denouncing something so shocking, let's take off our DU glasses for minute. Wouldn't the casual observer see as much ugly venom in this remark as in any of Coulter's vile statements? I don't see how that's an asset.

But I don't like the speculation as to her motive. The question should be left to the mind of the reader, not slammed heavy-handed onto the page.
