The Bush Bounce
June 16, 2006
The Bush Bounce

This weekend the story on the chat shows will be Is Bush Back? The media relishes Big Pronouncement stories. Bush Is Gone! Or, the President Lives Again! It sells. It's easy to talk--or debate--about. Everyone likes to ID a trend. And somehow the pundits often ID the same trend at the same time. One colleague was heading to a TV show to discuss the latest Bush bounce--Rove unindicted, Zarqawi dead, a surprise trip to Baghdad, a slight tick-up in his approval ratings--and asked my advice on how to counter the latest conventional wisdom.

I quickly came up with a list of talking points--which was useful since I have to discuss the very same subject on a show being taped today. So in case any of you are being cornered by Republican relatives or friends chortling over the Return of Bush, here are some one-liners. And, please, add your own in the comments section.

* There's always some bounce when you hit bottom.

* People in the media are getting really, really tired of the Bush-sucks story.

* Hey, Bush didn't screw up a major disaster this week, so that's something.

* He's the president; at least 37 percent of the public SHOULD like him.

* Well, it certainly is a great week when you chief strategist is NOT indicted.

* Check back with us next week.

1. Whether it's deserved or not, people want to believe...
in the President of the United States of America; their President (for better or worse).

4. All Within The Margin Of Error
Take 34%, add three or subtract three. That's 31 to 37%. Now if someone says 37%, it's 34 to 40%. Since 34, 35, 36, and 37 % are in both sets, we have a 40% overlap. In a more or less Poisson distribution, that would represent a 78% probability that they're the same number.

Just sayin'.

5. Good list!
It still blows my mind that Bush is an extraordinarily unpopular president, and the media just can't seem to wrap their heads around that fact.

6. That's not a "bounce" - it's just his nerves twitching.

7. yeah, they're going to convince the public that Bush is popular again
After all, they successfully convinced the public that the economy is doing great, right? Right????

Right.

It's amusing to watch them keep trying to roll that Bush boulder up the hill. Then perform a victory dance after achieving a quarter inch of mostly illusory progress. They'll probably still be twirling with glee when the boulder rolls back down. Which is inevitable, ever since the public's Chimplusionment achieved critical mass.

8. On the major disaster front --- the Idiot lost Somalia this week
Far more important than Zarqawi.

That is if you were actually trying to battle terrorism, not sagging poll numbers.

9. ONE POINT is a BOUNCE? Since WHEN? The M$M is not a
voice for the majority of people, nor is the Republican Congress in any way, shape or form, REPRESENTATIVE of the Will of the People! 60-70% believe that some sort of timetable for withdrawal of troops is necessary!

I hope he bounces to Hell, as that is the only 'place' fit for one who has long ago sold his soul.
