Republicans get letters from the troops
June 16, 2006 | WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Walter Jones, the North Carolina Republican who invented the phrase "freedom fries," invited me into his Capitol Hill office Thursday morning, a cluttered space festooned from floor to ceiling with military memorabilia, Pentagon plaques and photographs of soldiers. Then he pulled out an e-mail he had recently received from an Army captain who served in Iraq.

The e-mail quoted another American soldier serving in Iraq, a voice that Jones wanted people to hear. "Tell all those assholes in D.C. to get us the f--- out of here. This is bullshit," Jones said, reading from the e-mail, but choosing not to pronounce the f-word in full. "Either that or tell them to tell Bush to send over the twins. They can bunk with me. That would be useful."

3. Rep. Jones impressed me
It's nice when someone can admit they were wrong, you know? Not something you see out of the average congress critter, especially the Republican ones.

Rep. Walter Jones deserves all of our support as he tries to end this bloody war.

4. Walter Jones regrets that fries thing so much
He has been against this war and regrets his vote in favor of it for about two years now.

I may not agree with him on choice and civil unions, but he's a decent enough fellow - someone who cares about the troops and who can admit he made a mistake.

6. Why do the troops want to take a chance like that?
You know, there's a part of me that writes scathing and insulting satirical comments about well known people and their offspring, and then there's the part of me that thinks better of it, deletes it and write it again or decides not to respond at all (why do I do this? either from a sense of decorum or figuring that discretion is the better part of valor (it may be wise not to spit in the bear's eye). am I the only one who does this? do you sometimes go ahead with a less obvious epithet?). Today's snyde remarks included something about not knowing where some people had been but reluctantly agreeing in a way that said something about liking drunks, being very drunk, realizing one could (might indeed) die tomorrow and figuring why not... Of course, when stated bluntly the meanings are plain, as is, good luck figuring out what I almost said.
