Colbert, Westmoreland and those other 8 pesky Commandments
Crooks and Liars has the clip of the brilliant Colbert peeling back the veneer of Westmoreland and his passion for providing a display of the Ten Commandments in the Hall of the House of Representatives and the Chamber of the Senate. Maybe its to help him remember what they are.

This interview defines hypocrisy better than a dictionary ever could.

10. Important point: versions of the commandments differ
The original Hebrew version used by Jews differs from the way Protestants and Catholics divide up the text. For example, stealing is number 8 for Jews and Protestants, but 7 for Catholics. Which is just one more reason why displaying the commandments in public is a bad idea. Which version would be used? It's not hard to guess.

See this website for a handy comparison (scroll down to the chart at the bottom):

18. This was how the West Wing started
"Josh" appeared with a right winger on a talk show and apparently offended her. So they invited them to the White House to offer an apology. But, no, they wanted blood. And one of them started quoting his version of the Ten Commandment which was really goofy. And as "Toby" was telling him so, in walked the President, on crutches, citing the first one. And then really gave them a piece of his mind about right wingers who were sending hate mail to his 10 year old grand daughter and told them to get the hell out of his house.

Oh, and he was on crutches because... he collided with a tree while riding a bicycles. And this was in 1999 when Bush was still a dot..

19. It just is TOTALLY mindnumbing ...
It didn't take getting to Colbert undressing this clown to know he was a twit, a HUGE twit ...

People gotta see through this crap ... But, I am SURE, to his constituency, he is a "good, god loving american" cause of this BS about putting the 10 commandments in federal buildings ...

20. Hell yeah they listen. The Republican politicians
say that they value the Ten Commandments, and the people eat it up.

No one ever challenges them on it.

21. apparently his official rebuttal is that he is a victim of editing,
and, get this, he claims, in his own defense, that he could name seven of the ten, so somehow that makes it all better.

Even if its true, I am not impressed that such a Bible beater would only come up with seven of the ten.

That's 70%, just barely a C. Not so great for such a devoutly religious man.

And, besides, when he says it was "edited out" and he was able to name seven, how knows how long it took.

Maybe it was edited for time.

Bottom line: He doesn't know his commandments.

13. That was so strange!
I haven't been a church goer since elementary school and I can name all 10 (though messed up the order of some).
He was just trying to guess them by thinking what sins might be.

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout as the greatest threat facing America.

26. An instant classic
The clip was showed on Countdown and also on Randi.

How Colbert could stay in charactor and not totally lose it during that interview alone is deserving of an award. The fact that he was masterful in dealing with the stupidity & hypocrisy of Westmoreland reveals Colbert's genius.
