Today's climate change snapshot: "Air conditioners come to the Arctic"
http://nunatsiaq.com/news/climate/60616_01.html

KUUJJUAQ — Climate change is changing policy: this is the first summer that workers in Nunavik’s official buildings and businesses will be allowed to cool off with air conditioners.

That’s because Quebec’s energy office has finally changed a policy that prohibited the use of air conditioners in the region.

... In preparation for a hot summer ahead, the Northern Village of Kuujjuaq had already ordered a bunch of new air conditioners, which arrived before last week’s heat wave.

A good thing, because at 3 p.m. last Thursday, temperatures in Kuujjuaq hit 29°C, breaking the previous record for this date of 26.1°C set back in 1974.

The normal average daytime temperature in Kuujjuaq on June 8 is 10.7°C.

3. How much ice has to fall off Greenland into the ocean
before people agree that flag-burning, gay marriage and illegal immigrants are not our most pressing problems?

Answer: A lot, apparently.

4. And a really sad note...
Polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea may be turning to cannibalism because longer seasons without ice keep them from getting to their natural food, a new study by American and Canadian scientists has found.

...

"During 24 years of research on polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea region of northern Alaska and 34 years in northwestern Canada, we have not seen other incidents of polar bears stalking, killing, and eating other polar bears,'' the scientists said.
