Jackson, Ms. mayor wants to bring in Nat. Guard to thwart city crime
Our whacked out Mayor wants to bring in the National Guard troops and helicopters and military Intelligence and a 7 pm curfew on kids to stop crime in the city. Gov. Barbour says he has no ability to do so, but the mayor is telling him he's not looking for permission, just letting him know. This should be fun.

3. Well, someone will have to try the NG for local law enforcement so........
.....that when the neocons really want to crack down there will be a precedent for this stuff. Maybe we'd better start keeping track of how many times, what party, what reasons given, of any local call up of the NG.

7. It won't take much.
Our Mayor already runs around in SWAT gear, a bullet proof vest and Glock. He goes on raids with the police and mans roadblocks. Should not be too hard to upgrade to a helmet and M16.
The Gov. has no love for him already. He fired him from the Bureau Of Narcotics Directors job he had before he ran for Mayor

5. Mississippi still has National Guard troops available?
That in and of itself is kind of newsworthy. I know that come fire season here in the West, less than 10 weeks away now, we're going to be hard pressed for folks to help out as our Guard people are all in training to go to Iraq they're going to be too busy to defend our forests.

6. MS law says "The Governor shall be Commander-in-Chief of the militia,
except when it is called into the service of the United States, and shall have power to call forth the militia to execute the laws, repel invasion and to suppress riots and insurrections."

"All able-bodied male citizens of the State {of Mississippi} between the ages of eighteen and forty-five years shall be liable to military duty in the militia of this State, in such manner as the Legislature may provide."

A sheriff or other local official may be able to direct available personnel as a posse.

9. Gov. Barbour says it is unprecendented.
But he will meet w/ the mayor.
The MS. Adj. Gen. Of the Natl. Guard says he only takes orders from the governor and the mayor is "nowhere in the chain of command".
The mayor says he is going through with it no matter what they say.
Retiring to my bunker.
