After reading about the Food 4 Kids backpack program, I wrote a LTTE

I wanted to make my fellow texans aware of a program sponsored by the north Texas Food Bank-the Food 4 Kids program. It's difficult to believe that in the United States many children go to bed hungry every night. This program works through the public school system, providing backpacks with non-perishable food items that provide well-balanced meals for the child and their younger siblings, while avoiding the stigma that might prevent a child from seeking this assistance.Currently, this program works out of 19 sites in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area.If you are interested in helping with this program,go to http://www.ntxfoodbank.org/fact_sheets_food_4_kids.cfm Kids are our future.Let's help them get the best start possible.

1. We've Got One Of These Programs In Our Community
and there was some joker on DU earlier talking about "there will always be poor people"

To me the backpack program is bittersweet.

Bitter in that we, the richest country in the world, have kids that go hungry.

Sweet in that there is a program for these kids that isn't stigmatizing to them. (backpacks are commonplace things at a school)

4. Thanks for making us aware of a great program like this.
I think even a skinflint such as myself can cough up a few bucks for something this worthwhile (he said aggreivedly)...
