Almost 6 years into Presidency, Bush FINALLY does one thing right.
16 June 2006

Bush Creates World's Largest Marine, Protected Area
Northwestern Hawaiian Islands monument covers more than 11,600 square kilometers

Washington –The largest single conservation area in U.S. history, and the largest protected marine area anywhere in the world was established by President Bush June 15.

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument is distinctive not only for its size but as a unique ecosystem hosting a diversity of life, some of which is found nowhere else. The archipelago stretching almost 2,600 kilometers across the central Pacific Ocean is home to more than 7,000 marine species, and is the largest and healthiest coral-reef system in the United States.

2. Why do I suspect he did it for some wrong reason?
I'm sure it was Rove's idea, not the Chimp's.

3. No gas and no oil, but a future for tourist industry?
There's a hook in that somewhere.

4. it is a measure of my cynicism
that i see this in a cynical light:

an election year ploy to defuse environmentalist critics & give his minions an 'earth-friendly' talking point: look, he created the worlds' largest marine protected area! he's a friend of the earth! just ignore those tree huggers, they're never happy.

that it comes at no co$t to his ma$ter$ at big oil comes as no surprise.

7. Ayup
132,000 sq miles of the 140,000 were already protected reserves. He's bumped them up to national monument status, so they'll enjoy greater federal protection. Commendable, but I'm wary of anything the venal git does. I wonder what campaign donations from commercial fisheries have been like lately.

11. Conservation is a weak-spot
for republicans. Some christians are realizing, for example, that God having made the planet (in their view), he might not be too keen on the idea of mankind trashing it. (To say nothing of our joint future prospects on this planet.)

It's an election year gesture: an attempt to put a little green in the neocon sea of blood-red. And it's nothing like a broad commitment to conservation and remediation, which isn't going to be forthcoming from these looters.

15. the islands are small, far flung, hard to reach, uninhabitable
except for some US Parks people who rotate in & out & live in a tent camp. Brazillions of birds (& some seals)live on the islands.

17. What's the catch?
There has to be one. He didn't do it out of the goodness of his heart - he doesn't have one. He didn't do it because it was the smart thing to do - he doesn't have a brain. He didn't do it because it was good for the environment - he doesn't give a rats patootie about the environment.

20. I'm with most of you here....
I couldn't believe it when I heard about this yesterday. There has to be some angle, some reason for this move. It takes 3 days by boat in rough seas to get there.
Don't get me wrong, I am soooooo glad this has been done, but I keep wondering why.

21. Might be "the catch" :
read linked article & BUsh's speech about it. Seems he wants fish-farms established in the ocean. Not sure why--probably another move to control everything--ya know Rev. Moon owns most commercial fisheries in the uS? Uh oh....
