Iraq: Violence against women increases sharply

Feature, 03/31/2004

The assassination attempt against the only female member in the Iraqi cabinet, Nisreen Mustafa al-Burwari, earlier this week, shows the urgent need for security in Iraq. The attack is the second directed at a female political leader -- in September 2003 'Aquila al-Hashimi was killed. She was one of only three female members in the Iraqi Governing Council (IGC).

Violence against women and girls has sharply increased in Iraq compared to the time before last year's war. After the war, there was a complete breakdown of law and order. Even though the situation has generally improved since those first months, the lack of security still remains a serious threat to the population. Many women and girls live under constant fear of being harassed, beaten, abducted, raped or murdered.

15. I don't find that violent rape allusions move the debate forward very much
Maybe that's just me being the big old liberal. Oddly (and hypocritically), I get a little snicker out of jokes about Cheney and Rumsfeld going to Gitmo and fighting over who gets the baddest boyfriend to protect them. But for some reason I draw the line at jokes about chemical rapes of women, even if it's about women who political viewpoints differ from mine.

2. Well Jean, how about you go live among them?
Since they're so liberated, how about you go live with them? We'd be so pleased to see you so happy and free as they are.

4. They lie about EVERYTHING!!!!!!
God, it makes me so mad that they get away with lying about everything. The pundits do it, the house does it and the administration does it. I doubt it will ever stop.

5. Iraqi womens' freedom has deteriorated since the occupation!
Schmidt is a liar. But then Congressmembers are permitted to lie by an official agreement among members. They are not held accountable for what they say on the floor.

13. Al Qaeda terrorizing Iraqi women, says report
BAGHDAD -- On orders of the leader of Al Qaeda in Iraq, men in black have begun terrorizing women who do not conform to their rules, it was reported.

Following a sermon by Abu Mussab Al Zarqawi, the head of Iraqi Al Qaeda, new rules were announced regarding women's behavior, The Sunday Times of London reported.

"Women cannot drive; women cannot go out after midday; women and men are not allowed to go out and walk together, they must walk separately," a local official announced.

Violations will be punished sternly by men in black, all Sunni Muslims - with punishments ranging from shaved heads to death. Women live in fear, while nothing is done to curb the ongoing terrorism, the newspaper said.
