Looking for another Organization to support
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 09:03 PM by BayCityProgressive
Hello everyone..I am a member of several organizations, Anti-Defamation League, Human Rights Campaign, Amnesty International, The Democratic Party, Democratic Socialists of America. I have an increase of income now and would like to join another. WHat do Duers recommend? Sierra Club? Rainbow/ Push Coalition? A pro-Choice group like Emily's List? I really am torn and would like some advice from other activists!

3. consortiumnews.com
They're apparently having a cash flow crunch. BLM supports them, consequently I support them. Check it out, get a hold of her for more details.

4. Have you considered supporting individual candidates?
Finding a candidate with whom you agree and supporting them is much more valuable, IMHO, than sending money to an organization that selects political campaigns to support based on their own criteria.

Find somebody you like. Help them get elected. Enjoy the tangible return on your investment.

...just my advice.

Don't let them try to classify/disappear/rewrite history any further than they already have. Records and timelines will be necessary and useful when the real trials begin.

"To provide a means for members of civil society to monitor the activities of powerful entities, such as governments, large corporations, and wealthy and influential individuals."

They are seeking funds in a fund drive right now.

Without the White Rose, many would not be able to hear progressive radio at all.

No, you don't have to run Greens against progressive Dems, but support the party and its enlargement definitely where you can.

15. Oh, even DU can't admit it doesn't like their platform
DU would support them in a heartbeat if they felt they could win elections. I'm just saying to build them at small levels, not run them against popular and progressive Dems. Maybe the day will come when they can enter the US Congress, because they're the only ones standing up against militarism and for workers it seems.

14. Not a political group, but Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans
Frontieres) does very good work, and there are an awful lot of starving and/or desperate people in the world right now. They won a Nobel Prize (in 1999, I think) for the awesome work that they do around the world.

16. Are you looking for a specific area?
When I worked as fundraiser/PR for a few charities it became very obvious that some weren't worth spending your cash on, for my money the better ones are:

International Aid - Medecins Sans Frontieres http://www.msf.org/ ( & APHEDA http://www.apheda.org.au/

Many international aid agencies are constrained by the funds they receive from governments (eg can not provide reproductive choice and often refuse to discuss the structural reasons for third world poverty and do not criticise the provision of "disaster capitalism)

Reproductive Rights - International Planned Parenthood http://www.ippf.org/ Help replace funds lost through the global gag rule (see http://www.ippf.org/ContentController.aspx?ID=13469 Global Safe Abortion Fund)

Labor Rights - http://www.laborrights.org/ and http://www.solidaritycenter.org/ and of course if you're not already a member join your local union

Other than that I'd just say that if you don't want your money going to religious education be VERY VERY wary of donating to any fund with a religious connection, one of the world's biggest aid agencies that claims to be non denominational spends funds on buying bibles and building churches. They claim this is requested by local communities however they would never provide funds to support any non Christian religion regardless of community requests

20. I also give to DAV, Disabled American Vets.
I initially chose them to contribute to as I figured they were not being sufficiently funded, and they've always been so grateful for every dollar that comes their way.

I'm not a vet, but I am on disability, so that's why too.

And to the MSPCA (Society for prevention of cruelty to animals), the USO, and I was giving to the Red Cross.

I've been thinking about Sea Shepherd www.seashepherd.org who work to protect the wonderful whales.

After earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes I gave to the Red Cross. When the problems were reported about Red Cross management of funds, instead I started giving to the NAACP since they do a lot of great work in areas like New Orleans re voting, and of course for civil rights.
