Why Do We Write?
This is my contribution to an old discussion:

http://www.dvorkin.com/essays/whywewrite_d.html

I gave a short talk about this to a local Mensa chapter, and afterwards I realized that I had much more to say. So, having my own Web site, I said it.

My wife was inspired to write on the same subject from her somewhat different point of view. When she's finished her essay, I'll post it, as well, so that we'll a nice contrast and balance on the site.

1. I can't seem to stop writing
terribly addicted, but, according to your essay I've got good company.

I haven't been able to write about anything much more than the Bush regime's militarism for a few years now, though.

2. Yeah, the destruction of one's country can be inhibiting!
But I tell myself that it's important psychologically just to write, whatever the subject matter. That's one reason I've been adding essays, like this one about writing, to my Web site. Completing something and then putting it where it can be read is satisfying and makes me want to write more.

3. I wonder this a lot
sometimes I think I write instead of praying.

Not sure that it does as much good, however.

4. It does me a lot more good
But then I'm an atheist, and so I never pray. :)

5. Well, then that explains it!
But one day I was thinking I was rather lonely and I might go to DU and hang out and poke people with sticks and see if they bite...things like that. I was bored.

And I heard (as an atheist you are allowed to think I'm delusional) "well, Jen, you can talk to me anytime you want."

Kind of put a different spin on my DU activities for a bit.
