USA Today: "enthusiasm seems to be waning" for An Inconvenient Truth!!!
What a fucking joke.

That fact is this movie is still on a very limitted release. Enthusiasm is building, from everything I've heard. And it did some very respectable numbers this weekend...#5 in $'s per theater:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x1456381

And the highest "fresh" rating at rotton tomatoes:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=115x57365#57385

This asshole Thomas K. Arnold doesn't seem to know his ass from a pigeon:

Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth took in $1.75 million, up 16% from last weekend, but enthusiasm appears to be waning. The movie has taken in $6.4 million in four weeks. Final numbers are out today.

Wait for it Thomas, you blistering idiot.

4. They should have never released it so limited
Instead, they should have thrown it up against the 'blockbusters' and let it compete. This limited release thing is crap, and only gives fodder to the idiot wingers who say Global Warming doesn't exist.

I want to see it, I'd pay money to see it, but I can't because in order to see it I have to drive how many hours? And what does driving for an hour say about my environmentalism?

Stupid move by Gore, stupid move by the DNC, stupid move by everyone involved. This movie is important, show it, show it everywhere, let the ticket-sales do the talking.

I think it will prove to be a pretty savy move in the end.

7. "They" don't get to choose whether to release it limited or wide --
If a producer has an obvious blockbuster then they can choose to release limited or wide, but when you have a documentary about science, a downer topic such as global warming, 'starring' an ex-politician doing a Power Point presentation, then, you, the producer don't get to choose wide release - you get to beg theaters to *please* show the movie and if the first theaters make $$ then it is picked up by other theaters.

At least that is what I think the drill is when you have a documentary of nearly any type...

:hi:

10. It's up to the distributor
Paramount Classics, in this case. One of the reasons offbeat movies like this are previewed at festivals like Sundance is to woo distributors.

12. Yep. And AIT got 3 standing ovations at Sundance and
still only opened at 4 theaters the first week, then 70+ the second weekend, then 120+.

Even after 3 standing ovations at Sundance I think the distributors still had cold, cold feet until the box office was great the first and second weekends in a variety of locations.

Distributors are Wienies!

20. You wanna take back the "stupid move by Gore" statement yet?
As others have explained to you, it wasn't up to Al Gore how many theaters would carry the film. If it was, it could not be more obvious that he would have gone for the maximum number. My son was invited to a pre-screening in Seattle for the environmental community there. Gore attended and took questions afterward, and asked them to please spread the word as wide as possible, and ask people to call their local theatres and request that they show the film. It was pretty much the same with Fahrenheit 911 -it took a while, but eventually that movie made it to many of the major cineplexes.

34. The DNC will be very surprised that the organization has suddenly become
film distributors.

Do you really think the DNC (or even Al Gore himself) had anything to do with the distribution of this film?

5. explain the facts to me
Al Gore's movie is up 16% with a limited run of 400 theaters but enthusiasm is waning
Ann Coulter's book is a best seller but is now selling for 4.99 which is the price
on the discard table of the bookstore I shop at.

8. Up 16% in revenue is what he's saying. Total revenue.
The fact that it's #5 in per-theater earnings escapes Thomas K. Asswipe though.

Anticipation is growing. I'm sure lot's of people will be talking about it this week, and with ANOTHER increase in the release next weekend I think it will have a much better showing.

Stay tuned.

Try five for a dollar from one of the google website ads that are now on DU.
How else can they keep it a best seller unless it's cheaper than firewood?

17. yeah, right
:eyes: In the Vegas area, with all of the theaters, there is only one theater showing it. One theater out of all the theaters we have in this city--that also includes the Henderson, Boulder City area. And, that theater is way across town from us. Maybe, just maybe, if they allowed it to be shown in more theaters, the box office numbers would be different---do ya think, news whore?

And since their job is covering all aspects of media, I take their word for it. It is expected to be the third largest grossest documentary behind Fahrenheit 9/11 and March of the Penguins.

It did. It spoke about AIT projected to be the #3 doc of all time, behind Fahrenheit 9/11 and March of the Penguins. Said that critical response has been positive and that the % has risen. It is nothing but good news all around.

19. I just saw it and its magnificent. If we can reverse anything - ti may
be partly in response to the way it's all put together in this documentary.

Bravo, everyone who is responsible and everyone who goes to see it.

While sitting there I thought of all the hard nosed people who will refuse to see it.

P.S. the name of one of the producers was Jeff Skoll. At first I thought I was seeing Jeff Skilling. Imagine - one Jeff has a part in producing something wonderful and a contribution to our planet and us. The other one, in jail, said this week that he considered suicide.

Thanks Al!

People don't flock to documentaries, and they don't make that much money in the movie theaters. This particular film has had a lot publicity, which is a double edged sword in some respects. The righties won't go to see it because they think it is a political ploy on Gore's part. The lefties will HOPE that it is a political tease on Gore's part and will cheer it, but may not run to see it at the theater because they already know and understand the global warming threat. The blow-with-the-wind americans probably won't be interested in seeing it in the theater (no car chase or special effects), but will eventually pay to view it on DVD.

Just my take on it. :)

27. Really? Last night I saw it and the entire audience clapped at the end !!
I think the word is getting out. It's a movie with a powerful message. It's great science with a very interesting human story about Gore.

I will be purchasing a copy of the DVD when it comes out, and I will show it every year to my Physics and Earth Science HS students. I made it extra credit to go see it and write an essay, and had about 10 students and their parents do so.

Gore has a great way of explaining the very difficult very easily. He's a great teacher.

36. I saw the movie last week at a small community theater.
I went during the day, so the crowd was small. After the show, I asked the manager "How is this film doing?" He told me the theater is usually at least 3/4 full on weekend evenings.

Were this film 'allowed' in the large theater chains, I suspect it would pack the house. And that is precisely why it won't happen; sunshine and the bu$h regime don't mix well.
