1. Thanks so much for posting this. You might want to cross post it in
the PNAC and Neocon Agenda group with link below:

I read Strauss years ago, and always believed that he wrote about enlightened authors, but was not himself enlightened, and so he spawned a lot of misconception. I still cannot conceive of how he could have intentionally planned the evils that seem to be inherent in the PNAC agenda; he loved Plato, beauty and truth. Much like Einstein, although Einstein was enlightened, IMHO, and Strauss was not.

BTW, I love your sig line; that's one I've not read.

2. Plato was an advocate of elitist rule and the 'noble lie'.
Edited on Mon Jun-19-06 07:05 AM by Warren Stupidity
The New Yorker ran a series on Strauss and his political philosophy that got me aware of him. The man was odious. One of his central themes was the necessity of deception by the rulers of the people. We have seen this in practice in the Bush administration. As the saying goes, they lie about everything, even when they have no need to do so.

Here is a great place of Leo Strauss research: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Leo_Strauss

4. Thanks for the link, I will definitely check it out! Plato's 'elites'
were the enlightened few, not land owners or those interested in politics or business, but only in the pursuit of the Truth. This becomes perverted if you don't understand Plato's intent, much like the misinterpretation of the intent of the The Gita, which translated into India's caste system, which still exists today, in spite of Gandhi and democracy. IMO, Plato's Republic was in part responsible for the organization of the Catholic Church, with monastic priests and nuns excluding marriage and property in favor of the pursuit of God.

6. Well yes but the rulers always imagine themselves
to be 'the enlightened few' and they somehow seem to own most of the stuff too. It is a vast flaw in everything from The Republic to The Dictatorship of the Proletariat. All that grand philosophizing ends up being a rationalization for murder and theft.
