There was an advertisement, masquerading as a "news story"
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 08:49 AM by raccoon
on the local news in my area (Upstate SC) last night.

I just sent that NBC station the following email:

I watched the 6:00 evening news on WYFF yesterday, June 20.

There was a story about some billboards up here and there around Greenville, saying things that made no sense, something like "Clowns love tangelos," "I am a big toe picker," and "I pooted."
It was revealed in the story that these billboards are "teasers" for some show on the cartoon network.

This was NOT a news story! It was an advertisement, pure and simple.

I watch your show to see LOCAL NEWS. If you're going to show advertisement, I'll switch and watch channel 7's local news.

Of course, channel 7 may not be any better! :-)

I don't know about you, but I find this sort of thing disgusting. I'd heard about this on network evening news, but I guess I never noticed it so glaringly on the local news.

Any of you guys see a similar "news story" on your local news?

edited for typo.

1. It's no better here in Austin
It's gotten so that I rarely bother with the local news.

2. Yep, I've seen it...
around Christmas time every news station in the area ran a "story" about the mannequins in the Victoria's Secret shop in a local mall were posing in provocative ways, and it was stirring up controversy.

Apparently after these stories ran, there were so many people trying to get into the store, they had to call out extra security.

3. "News" is over.
Katie Couric now holds the spot that used belong to Dan Rather. There seriously is no point in watching anymore.

I now get all my information about the world from the internet and print papers -- but even newspapers are self-destructing very quickly.

4. I don't even pay attention to local news anymore
I live in SC like yourself, and the only time I pay attention to the local news is for the weather reports, if there is bad weather about. They're not really worth paying attention to for anything else.

You could always go to the website of the news you normally listen to, and directly check out the news there, without the awkward local news reporters interferring :)

5. All television programs are simply filler
to get you to the next commercial. So why not make the filler commercials as well?

6. I never watch local news,
i even quit watching for weather. I now watch the weather channel for local weather, and if i want to see whats happening in the world i watch the BBC.

9. Sad thing is
Even the weather channel is becoming more commercial. I'll still use them mostly for hurricane information, but they're getting waaaaaaay too commercial for my liking. I don't like devoting a primetime hour to "Storm Stories" (or whatever it is called). I was watching them do a normal weather report the other day, and John Salley (basketball player) came in, over top of the weather map and everything, and started giving predictions on the NBA Finals. What the hell?

10. YES!
i DETEST storm stories. everything has to be 'reality teevee' now. ugh. just give me the weather straight. all i NEED is Dave Swartz's quips. for entertainment.

i also will not watch local 'news'. and seems like teevee gnews channels are just bigger 'local news'.
teevee gnews is just for disaster video.

7. Here's a concept, TURN OFF YOUR TV!!!
Oy vey!!! You don't like what you are seeing or hearing, shut the damn stupid box off!!

I will never ever understand why people complain about the crap on tv yet they will not shut it off.

I have been without a tv now for a year and you know what? I don't miss the stupid mind melting propaganda machine one bit.

8. I probably will, one of these days.
Main reason I watch local news is to get the weather. And hear about local happenings. I'm real interested in true crime.

I don't have cable, just the rabbit ears. In a few years, when everything has gone to HDTV, I don't think those will work. So I won't have TV then.

11. They've been doing that in KC for years
I tune them out, lately while watching the nbc national news, I've come to realize I already know the stories, sometimes days have passed before they're picked up.
I'm watching now just to see if they cover stuff and if they do how it's done.
