A Hollywood-budget public service announcement aims at discouraging suicide attacks in Iraq and elsewhere.

June 20, 2006 - Remember the egg, the frying pan and the message? "This is your brain," the ominous narrator told us before cracking an egg over the sizzling skillet. "This is your brain on drugs." Public service announcements have changed a lot since that foreboding culinary lesson. They now include exploding cars, flying Matrix-style stuntmen and exceedingly dire messages like "Don't Suicide Bomb." A new, American-made PSA aimed at discouraging these deadly attacks is currently in production. The ad is slated to air as a 60-second spot on Iraqi television this summer.

It's a tall order considering that post-occupation Iraq is now rife with militant groups and plagued by increasing sectarian violence. In March alone there were an estimated 175 suicide bombings. There’s also the question of just who will be able to see the PSA. The cost of owning a TV is often prohibitive for the average Iraqi, and those who are affluent enough to get Iraq’s state-sponsored programs are not always thrilled by what they’re seeing. Though there is the new, post-Saddam Iraqi Media Network (IMN), its $6-million monthly budget is provided by the United States and many local viewers feel that its positive reports on the U.S.-led war are simply propaganda so they turn to satellite TV instead. Those who are lucky enough to obtain a satellite dish can receive programs from all over the world as well as independent, Arab-run news channels like Al-Jazeera. And will the type of young man drawn to extremist groups be likely to sit around watching TV?

9. Yeah, the suicide bombers watch a lot of TV.

If you were a 12 year old in that area and had seen family members killed...and you had no future, would you buy that message?

What we are dealing with is CULT MENTALITY.. It's a death cult, but still a cult..

If intelligent, privileged, modern people can get sucked into cults (Think Davidians, Jim Jones, Moonies, etc) what on earth makes these idiots think that we can change minds in a culture we know nothing about, and have ZERO influence over:shrug:

8. I saw a great parody shirt of the "This is your brain on drugs"
campaign. It had three frames. First was an empty frying pan with the caption "This is your brain". Second was a frying pan with two eggs with caption that said "This is your brain on drugs". Third was a frying pan with two eggs and bacon with caption that said "This is your brain on drugs with a side order of bacon." :)

As much as we may deplore it, the cult of the martyr runs to some very deep, esoteric feelings and I daresay, no 30-second commercial by the enemy is going to change that.

25. i think my humor meter blew a fuse...
i thought there could be nothing more from this maladministration to surprise me. nothing too absurd, useless, craven, or comical, i could not be phased anymor., that i've reached my limits of expectation of good taste and common sense, no longer could i be surrpised when they are sorely let down. and yet, again, they succeed to surprise and dumbfound me. the abyss truly is bottomless, isn't it?

PSAs for suicide bombing... i think i've now heard all, but i just know that it's only a matter of time before this too gets topped. seriously, the Prince of Lies must be laughing his ass off, this script is just too good!
