Spector Threatening To "Lay Down The Guantlet" AGAIN...
Specter to grill officials on Bush ignoring laws

By Andy Sullivan

Wednesday, June 21, 2006; 6:06 PM

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration will have to explain why it thinks it can ignore or overrule laws passed by Congress in a hearing next week, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said on Wednesday.

Specter, a Pennsylvania Republican, said he hoped to force the Bush administration to reduce its use of "signing statements" -- memos that reserve the right to ignore laws if the president thinks they impinge on his authority.

"Our legislation doesn't amount to anything if the president can say, 'My constitutional authority supersedes the statute.' And I think we've got to lay down the gauntlet and challenge him on it," Specter said in a telephone interview.

A Justice Department official is scheduled to testify at a hearing on signing statements next Tuesday, Specter said.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, who had lunch with Specter on Wednesday, will face questions about the presidential memos when he appears before the committee on July 18 to discuss the National Security Agency's domestic spying program.

"Lay down the gauntlet" is pretty milquetoast, don'cha think? This certainly fills me full of optimism that something will get done! :eyes:

You're not going to give us your "Magic Fulluvit" theory now, are you?

Don't strain yourself, Senator!

China makes them more cheaply - he's got many more to throw... Action actually costs something so the best he can do is throw cheap guantlets.

17. Arlen "Single-bullet" Specter Was a Dem but turned Repuke.
See: http://www.nndb.com/people/323/000023254/

One would think that with his near death experience with cancer that he'd want to do the right thing.

18. Pssst: He is trying to do the right thing...
If he acts up too much the pukes will take away his chairmanship. That's why he backs off. You are right, his near death with cancer is the only reason he is acting like this. I think he is interested in a legacy, so he is doing the right thing.

It would probably be best if we continue puttin on the hate towards him, so he'll look like a puke.

19. More posturing from the Prince of Poseurs
The corrupt Bush administration knows that Arlen will forget all about his tough talk over the weekend. If they actually have to send someone over next week, the witness won't be sworn in, will answer about three softball questions, dodge one "tough" question, then hold forth for half an hour scolding the committee for wasting the official's valuable time. Arlen will thank the witness, nod sagely, then go back to sleep.

When the cameras are rolling again, he'll affect some more fake dudgeon, and start the whole charade over again. Isn't representative government fun?

20. I'm beginning to believe
...that he is cashing in everytime he "throws down the guantlet". He puts pressure on, then gets a phone call from the WH, they hook him up with campaign favors, and then at the last minute he carries bush* water.

I can't think of any other reason why he would act in such a bi-polar manner.

21. Theyre distancing themselves , ONLY because
they understand the depths of bushs depravity and how thats going to affect upcoming elections.

I watched a Frontline documentary on the run up to war, Bush should be in prison, not running the Republican Party. Its too late repubs. You in Congress, rubberstamped everything he placed in front of you since 2000. Now you wanna act as if you are independent minded. What a joke. Highlight this.
