Four U.S. Marines killed in western Iraq

Military says three died in roadside bombing in restive Anbar province
Updated: 3:26 a.m. ET June 22, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The U.S. military announced Thursday that four Marines were killed during operations in insurgent-ridden Anbar province, three of them in a roadside bombing.

The military statement said three Marines assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 “died after their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.” It said the fourth Marine, assigned to 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, “died after being attacked while conducting security operations.”

At least 2,511 members of the U.S. military have died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. The figure includes seven military civilians.

1. And didn't a fifth (soldier, not USMC) die in Baghdad as well?
The U.S. military Thursday reported four Marines and a soldier were killed in operations south and west of Baghdad, and an explosion of sectarian and revenge killings in Iraq's third largest city over the past three days claimed 24 lives.

KABUL (Reuters) - Four U.S. soldiers have been killed and one wounded in clashes with Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, the U.S. military said on Thursday.

More than 1,000 people have been killed in Afghanistan this year, the worst violence since the 2001 overthrow of the Taliban. The violence has surged as NATO prepares to takes over security duties from U.S.-led forces in the south, the rebel heartland.

The latest clash occurred in the eastern province of Nuristan on Wednesday.

"Coalition forces attacked enemy extremists in a remote area of the Kamdesh District while conducting security operations to interdict enemy movement through northern Nuristan," the U.S. military said.

4. This is ironic since the Dems. proposed Amendments

in the Senate to change the course of direction of this war. bush wants to continue doing the same thing over and over that has failed to bring any semblance of peace to the country we invaded to bring them prosperity, peace and democracy.

The Dems. pretty well explained why we need to do something positive when it comes to Iraq and how to resolve this horrible situation for the U.S. and the Iraqis.

This reminds me of what Kerry said in the 60's when he said something about the last to die for a worthless cause. The Defense Dept. is so screwed up. Rummy doesn't have a clue. Each day that one of ours dies in this mess is a very sad day.

The Dems. made me proud in the Senate when they clearly gave their opinion as to where this war was going. They pretty well said we are in a lose lose situation if we don't allow the Iraqis to take care of themselves. This is a Sunni vs. Shiites problem and we are not helping it with our "stay the course" bush plan. Can you imagine how the Iraqis feel when our troops are roving their streets, it says to me we are in control, not them.
