Edwards will propose cutting poverty by 1/3 in next ten years
In a major policy speech Ex-NC Senator John Edwards will propose cutting the poverty rate in the US by one-third in the next ten years and "put in place a 'working society' where Americans are rewarded for hard work with a livable safety net of health and welfare incentives."

I haven't chosen a candidate yet for '08, but Edwards is one of my top choices because he really cares about an issue I care about--poverty. Helping the poor isn't a "sexy issue" most politicians talk about "the middle class", while giving little or no time to the poor.

3. Yes I agree
I like him too and Dennis Kucinich for their appeal to the average American and their priorities aimed at where they are needed most.

8. Another decade-from-now promise
Ehhhh, we'll get to it in a few years. For now, you people just have to live with it. Yeah, yeah, some of you won't be able to pay your bills until 2016, but, just hang in there.

The other 2/3's...you guys will have to wait 20 or 30 years, if we even get to the other 1/3.

9. gee, what do you expect with the crowd we have in there right now?
Edwards is proposing change and believe it or not change does take time and cutting the poverty rate won't happen over night and Edwards also will need a congress which is cooperating with him. So, there are lots of obstacles but at least he's talking about it which is more than most other politicians are doing.

10. I've heard the same reasoning for Iraq

"Sure it will be a safe democracy, but it will take 20-30 years. These things don't happen overnight"

A lot can happen in that time, the least of which isn't a future GOP administration deconstructing his efforts. Kudos to Edwards for trying, but I can't get excited over 30-year-plans. Even Mao Tse Tung knew to try stuff in chunks of 5 years, and the Chinese are infinitely more patient than we are.

11. Edwards was my first choice in 04
I had the distinct honor to meet Mr. Edwards and his wife while working on the Kerry campaign here in Tennessee. I can't say enough about how genuine this guy is and how eager he is to make an impact on the everyday American.

America needs more people like John Edwards.
