Look them straight in the eyes, blink, and ask them wtf they're talking about, there's so such thing as a "death tax."

I'm so sick of Republican word games like "death tax" and "prolife"

:banghead:

1. Here's the kicker. No one argues about it because it applies to no one.
I don't know ANYBODY who the estate taxe effects. When I have debates, even with republicans, the topic never goes to the estate tax.

Only republicans in office, and their corporate masters care about this.

2. I've had people try to argue it with me
Apparently, they didn't realize they'd never be rich enough to have to think about it.

20. You do now
The estate tax hit me when my aunt died.

Back then the exclusion limit was only $ 600,000. If my aunt had died today it wouldn't have effected me. Of course many want to roll back all of Bush's tax cuts which would move the limit back down to $ 600 k again.

3. Anytime I hear a republican "line"
Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 01:48 PM by BOSSHOG
I tell them I'll give them a dollar if they can recite all of their talking points or do they have to have a cue to remember them. I tell them its truly enjoyable to see how Pavlov's theory applies to humans.

6. Same thing with "partial birth" abortion.
There is no such procedure. There is, however, a procedure called an intact dilation and extraction, used only in the most extreme situations.

8. I'd want to say "Well you can't take it with you"
I'd also like to say that we are only taxing the rich for their own good - look at all the stupid and useless things they waste their money on - like buying politicians or adorning themselves with the modern version of a lordship, a political seat.

country, you pay your taxes without bitching. Shuts the dumbshits up every time.

12. Death Tax? OK just give it away before you die. No Tax! Right?
WRONG - WRONG - WRONG

The federal estate and gift tax is a tax on the TRANSFER of wealth.
REPEAT: it a TRANSFER tax.

The dumb question in the header is just another trope-buster you can throw into conversation.
And if you do pose this question and someone buys it, ah, just walk away very slowly.

14. Tax allows the very wealthy to contribute something in their lifetimes.
Otherwise they may never pay a cent in taxes.

If their trust funds are based on dividends, the administration thinks it is a good idea not to tax the capital gains on those, so they won't be taxed there.

Charities receive donations from these people because it helps them defray the inheritance tax. The wealthy won't need to contribute if the inheritance tax is lifted. The contributions will be reduced if the incentive is not there.

Why should only the people who work for a living have to be taxed. The wealthy have more to lose and need to pay for national security, local police and fire, and they use the same roads the rest of us use. So let them pay their fair share sometime in their privileged lives.

Think Paris Hilton.

How many millions is your estate worth?

If the topic isn't discussed, bring it up. It needs to be discussed. If the wealthy never pay taxes, the rest of us will have to pay more.

Edited on Thu Jun-22-06 02:00 PM by xxqqqzme
that's the $28,000 (current as of March, '06) tax burden on every newborn's head to pay off the deficit.

17. But but but...
a death tax discourages people from dying, the invisible hand of the market told me so.

18. Ask them why the repubs want to destroy churches
The estate tax encourages the rich to give generously in their wills to all sorts of nonprofits... and of course churches. Believe me, as a trustee at a church, we need these contributions for the endowment. If most churches had to run just with what the weekly offering brings in, many would go belly up real soon. For that matter most orchestras and theaters wouldn't last long either.
