Soldier finds $55,000 (in Euros) of Zarqawi's money

Money found

Blackanthem Military News, BAQUBAH, Iraq, June 22, 2006

A Fort Campbell, Ky., Soldier who accidentally uncovered more than $55,000 in cash at the site where Iraqi terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi met his death said he never considered keeping the haul for himself.

nstead, Spc. John Larkin, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 1-32 Cavalry Squadron, 101st Airborne Division, quickly turned the money over to his platoon leader. After opening the tape-bound envelope, they found Euro notes worth approximately $55,000 three days after U.S. air strikes destroyed the home where al-Zarqawi was hiding.

...

"As the bulldozer was moving dirt back and forth, I went to see this brick," Larkin said. "I was going to pick it up, but I found out it wasn’t a brick.

"It was a wad of money, six or seven inches, wrapped in cardboard and it was all taped up."

...

"It was likely intended to be used to finance further operations," said Capt. Colin Tonsey, intelligence officer, 1-68 Combined Arms Team, 4th Infantry Division. "(We know) that Zarqawi has been known to bring money with him through his connections with various countries and to use Euros and dollars to finance operations."

He was recognized for honesty after finding more than $55,000 in cash and promptly turning it in to his chain of command. (Photo by Spc. Lee Elder, 133d Mobile Public Affairs Detachment)

2. Okay, good on him.
But since when is doing the right thing so exceptional that it requires a medal?

Or is doing the right thing becoming very exceptional among our soldiers in Iraq?

8. He didn't get a medal
He got a 'command coin' which is basically just a trinket used as a minor reward. Some soldiers collect them, and one given as a reward is better than one they bought themselves.

4. Bush and Rummy will be upset
That good ole' Zarqwawi was using Euro's instead of Dollars or the Iraqi currency of the month. Even our enemies that "hate us for our freedoms" and our "financial security" have turned to Euros.

6. Am I the only one
who's first thought was "this is probably just a way to launder that money"? After thinking about it a few moments I think that is unlikely and that the story as reported is very likely true. I guess I'm just getting cynical.

11. Funding from Europe?
Am I the only one connecting euros = Europe = terra-ist funding? Foreign governments might be doing more than we know to provide resistance in Iraq....

13. $55,000 of Zarqawi's money is worth more than a unit coin
For being observant enough to recover this much money, which by rights should go to the division morale fund, this trooper deserves at least a Secretary of Defense Coin, if not a Commander in Chief's Coin.

Yeah, I know it's Shrub, but it's a damn sight better than a squadron coin.

Oh yeah...why is this trooper who's supposedly in the 101st Airborne wearing a 4th Infantry Division unit patch? The only connection to the Screaming Eagles that I see here is the 101st combat patch his commander is wearing. Besides, the cav unit assigned to the 101st is the 2-17, not the 1-32.

16. Isn't the right-side patch his first combat unit?
and the left one his current unit?

I may have them backwards.

17. Right side is combat patch, left side is unit patch
You're almost exactly right.

The left-side patch is the Unit Patch. It denotes the unit you're in right now.

The right-side patch denotes a unit you've gone to war with. It's normally the first unit you served with--because you normally just sew the patch on and call it good--but it doesn't necessarily have to be. If your second tour is with a more prestigious unit than your first tour way, you'll probably change the patch out.

One of my squad leaders in Korea was a Vietnam veteran who was in eight different units in that war. This fucking guy had two sets of fatigues, four sets of BDUs, a summer Class A uniform and a winter Class A uniform...and no two uniforms had the same combat patch. The first sergeant hated him, but we hated the first sergeant so all was good.

As long as you can prove you were in the unit whose patch is on your sleeve, you're okay.
