We Have Reached An Important Point
"We have reached an important point when the end begins to come into view. The enemy's hopes are bankrupt."

Lt. Gen. William Westmoreland
Commander, U.S. forces in Vietnam
Press Conference
November 21, 1967

(Just in case there are any remaining folks undecided about whether Iraq is like Viet Nam)

5. The other night,
the History Channel showed "The Fog Of War."

I'd seen it before, but watched it anyway.

Again, I ended up in tears.

It is like watching Vietnam all over again. Even the rhetoric is the same.

It's beyond frightening.

I am completely convinced that we are doomed, and nothing, no one can help us.

I've given up.

8. The parallels, to those of us old enought to have gone through
that period, are simply staggering.

Same terminology, same buzz words, same justifications.

Smirky even said the other night that we can't leave IraqNam because it would 'dishonor the soldiers who have given their lives'.....same old same old...kill more people so that those who went before will not have 'died in vain'

12. And let's not forget Nixon ran on the motto "I will get us out of
VN with honor". Didn't we lose more soldiers after he took over?

18. I hear you.
I fear that our fate may even be worse than that. I keep seeing more similarities with the French in Vietnam. "The Dirty War" as they called it. Culminating in a national turning of the back on the soldiers there and the resultant slaughter at Dien Bien Phu. We need to bring our troops home before this heartless regime decides to let attrition rule the day, after they fill their pockets and become tired of their War on Terror charade.

10. Karzai criticizes War on Terror
Karzai Criticizes U.S.-Led Coalition Afghan President Karzai criticizes U.S.-led coalition, decrying hundreds of Afghan deaths

"It is not acceptable for us that in all this fighting, Afghans are dying. In the last three to four weeks, 500 to 600 Afghans were killed. (Even) if they are Taliban, they are sons of this land," a clearly frustrated Karzai told reporters in Kabul.

On Thursday, Afghan and coalition forces raided a Taliban compound northwest of Tirin Kot, the capital of Uruzgan province, killing eight militants, the coalition said. Six others were captured.

Karzai said the current focus on hunting militants didn't address terrorism's root causes. "We must engage strategically in disarming terrorism by stopping their sources of supply of money, training, equipment and motivation," he said.

16. I read this description elsewhere, and it caught my attention:
It is no longer a "war on terror"
it is a "war on the emotion signifying extreme dread and fear"

The basis of the war in IraqNam depends on how scared the Bushistas can keep the population, while still making enough confident in the Bushistas' ability in conducting this war on an emotion.

17. it's not a war on terror, it's a war of terror
Terror to keep the average citizen in an unquestioning lockstep, afraid to speak out, both
here and in Iraq.

11. Iraq and Vietnam are very similar
I think Iraq may end up being more conflicting in our history (because Saddam was legitmately a villian), but once you get past the initial invasion.
