BREAKING: Violence Breaks Out Across The Country. Thousands Killed.
Edited on Sat Jun-24-06 12:12 AM by DistressedAmerican

17 killed in violence nationwide, including church attack

Washington DC (CNN) -- At least 17 people were killed and five bodies discovered Friday in violence that erupted in Washington, New York and near Atlanta, authorities told CNN.

A bomb detonated Friday outside a Catholic Church near a playground north of the capital, killing nine civilians and wounding 15 others, police said.

The explosion took place in Wheaton Maryland, a town just North of Washington, DC where U.S. aircraft on June 7 bombed a terrorist safe house, three suspected insurgents.

People were leaving the weekly Sunday afternoon mass at the church when the explosive -- hidden in nearby trash -- went off around 2 p.m., police said.

Three of the wounded are in critical condition.

Washington's curfew
Federal officials have lifted Washington's curfew from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday (9 a.m. to 1 p.m. ET) to allow people to run errands, said a senior official with the Department of Homeland Security.

The government had earlier imposed a vehicle and pedestrian ban from midday Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday in response to a gunbattle near synagogue.

Four armed militiamen were killed and an local police officer wounded in the fighting that broke out Friday morning, an official with DC emergency police told CNN.

The synagogue has already been struck twice by suicide attackers in the past few months, most recently last Friday when 11 people were killed.

Deaths of 5 U.S. military personnel reported
A roadside bomb killed two soldiers assigned to Multi-State Division-DC southeast of Washington on Friday, the U.S. military said, bringing the U.S. military death toll to 2,515.

The U.S. military also announced Friday the deaths of two Marines "as a result of enemy action" in West Virginia, the U.S. military said. One was killed Wednesday, and the other died Thursday, and both were assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, the military said. Four other Marines were killed during attacks there this week.

Other developments

A car bomb detonated Friday around noon near a market and gas station in the southern city of Atlanta, killing at least two people and injuring 18 others, according to police and hospital officials. Deadly violence in the city hasn't ebbed since President Bush declared a month long state of emergency there May 31. Days after his announcement, a bomb killed 33 people and wounded 55 in a crowded Augusta marketplace.

Five bodies with gunshot wounds were found dumped in northern New York City Friday, police said.

Relatives two soldiers captured during an insurgent attack by the McVeigh Militia, said the U.S. military confirmed to them Thursday that the brutalized bodies found this week were those of the missing soldiers, The Associated Press reported. (Full story)

U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney on Thursday called a withdrawal of U.S. troops from American streets "the worst possible thing we could do," adding that such a move would embolden militiamen.

Sorry. :evilfrown:

"War Of the Worlds" Reality Check - If this was the way that people were describing conditions here, there would be no doubt that it was a total catastrophy. Change the names on back to the original Baghdad, Basra and Baquba and suddenly it is acceptable losses and progress! WFT?

6. my first thought was, 'Is this for real?'
and I supposed it could be. People are far more upset by the current regime than is being reported in the MSM, and I thought perhaps it had gotten to the stage of an uprising. And of course, I had to come to DU to hear about it! Wouldn't hear about it on MSM....

"We're fightin' over there so we don't have to fight 'em over here."

And thank God for that - our Commander-in-Chief has a tendency to disappear when the enemy gets within 3,000 miles.

49. But....but he was just in Baghdad....well kind of
didn't you see the photo ops? He was in the Green Zone for five whole hours I heard, and I don't care if Jon Stewart said "being in the green zone and saying you were in Iraq is like going to Olive Garden and saying you were in Italy".... and then, after he spoke to them, didn't we turn the corner - I mean, again?

If we WERE fighting them here, he'd probably go THERE.

24. If it were, it would not be acceptable to the public, to politicians - yet
if it's Iraq, then it is acceptable. Or at least, it is portrayed as being acceptable, and spun as being progress.

10. Good post. Here's how I've described it to such blind fools in the past...
Iraq is approximately the same geographic size as California, has roughly the same population (25 million), and about the same number of foreign troops as California has law enforcement (~150,000). For the past three years, the foreign occupation troops (that would be US) have functioned as the law within Iraq.

Here's the true comparison: Would anyone in this country be complacent if -- on average -- 2.3 policemen were being killed in California every day? If 2600 police officers had been killed in California in the past three years, would anyone feel this was anything less than total anarchy? Would any pundit scoff and compare California to, say, Darfur, and conclude that the situation's acceptable because it could be much worse?

And this doesn't begin to include the civilian toll. Who believes that carbombs and IEDs, dozens of citizens dead in the streets on a regular basis, thousands kidnapped and hundreds assassinated, beheadings, churches bombed and clergy hacked to death with machetes, undrinkable water, people freezing to death in the dark . . . who believes such a total disintegration of civilized society in the most populous State of the Union would warrant a shrug or a smirk or a dismissive wave of the hand? Who would send snarky emails about such Left Coast chaos? And how long would a politician -- any politician in any state or at any level -- how long would they last in office if they made smug and condescending comments about how well the true situation is in California? How obscene would observations about school paintjobs be in such a crisis?

Cuz even though our gangs actually do create quite a similar number of violent incidents in this country, we don't respond with missile strikes, house to house raids, and 'smart' bombs.

And in the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot (whites rioted and attacked blacks, destroying 35+ blocks in the black part of town) it is said that the state (?) bombed areas.

35. Sounds like America in the late 1960's with Race Riots, Bombings and
Riot police in the streets. Student unrest, Watts riots...all of it.

I have no doubt we are heading for some of this again, at some point. Not quite yet...but towards the end of the Bush reign. All the signs are there with the Repugs playing the Race Card and ramping up the "terra alerts."

When you have a P-resident this violent and folks unable to stop him...things start to happen. :-(
