My encounter with a freeper at Target just a little less than an hour ago
Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 05:02 PM by noahmijo
So I'm online at target right behind my girl who is buying some stuff for the couple whose wedding we're going to attend in a few hours.

The cashier is this girl probably some 19-20 year old who is obviously new and she's having a problem scanning I guess what's called the registry-you people who have been married before know what I'm talking about when a couple is getting married they create a registry with items that they want to have and give it to friends and family to get it for them ect and this way "gift receipts" are created easier.

Alright so anyways this lady (if you wanna call her that) is standing by the guy who is behind me she's about 50's I'd say. She starts out loud complaining about the wait just going on "oh my God I switched from two lines to come here cause I thought it'd be quicker!"

I just listened to her go on and on and on for about 5 minutes till she says "Why can't she just go to another line!?" (She was referring to my girlfriend here)

I turned around and said "Cause she started with this cashier they can't halt a transaction in progress like that with just a few strokes it would take much longer cause she has to get a manager, ect"

So for about two seconds that shut her up. I should point out I'm 24 years old here. This woman's old enough to be my mother, but sorry DU elders I never bought into that crap that you should respect your elders no matter what-there's no excuse for acting immature regardless of your age-ESPECIALLY when your age dictates that you should act more mature if anything.

Secondly she was obviously a New Yorker-just like me. A transplant. She also represents why alot of people out here in Arizona hate New Yorkers and well I didn't like her representing all of us like that.

So I said nicely "You know lady we're all in a hurry here, the cashier is working as fast as she can, why don't you cut her a break huh? just relax she's moving as fast as she can."

She says "Well *I* am in a hurry I don't have time for this!"

I said "Well what? you got a patient you gotta operate on in the next few minutes? are you gonna die? is this life or death?"

"Yes!!"

"Oh yea? who?"

"MY life! I could have a stroke any minute!"

At this point everyone else in the line was watching and they all cracked up when she said this.

She then says:

"Why don't you just turn around and look the other way just look the other way!"

"Well Ma'm I'm given you what you wanted. Attention. You wanted it you got it, and what's more I ain't ya husband and I think it's about that time when you need to learn that you're not always gonna get your own way especially using intimidation, okay I expect this kind of behavior from these little kids around here, but c'mon isn't it about time to grow up a little?"

I would've felt bad for the guy in the middle of us if he wasn't giggling so loudly.

So anyways then she says "I'm through with you! (man where have we heard that?!) GOD BLESS YOU! GOD STILL LOVES YOU! I am through with you!"

So then the mess is cleared with my girl, it's my turn, I pay for my items and the cashier at this point trying hard not to laugh but she's smiling pretty big and she says "Would like to sign up for a Target credit card?"

I said "I better not cause Margie over there's gonna have a freakin stroke if I spend one more minute here conversing with you"

To my disbelief the lady actually heard me and said "That's RIGHT!"

As I left I said "Lady if Heaven is full of people like you I can't wait to go to Hell have a nice day!"

Nothing beats a freeper better than public humiliation. NOTHING.

But God Bless You if you think otherwise :)

*FAQ: How does this make her a freeper?

Because only freepers pull this "God Loves You" crap while trying to justify their own greed and their own impatience and their own "ME" attitude when they are not getting their way.

This is from what I have seen. If you know of any non-freepers that in fits of anger when they were in the wrong pulled this "God Bless You but I hate you crap" OUT LOUD in public then let me know. I can picture DU'ers and non-freepers saying alot of shall we say derogatory remarks, but somehow I can't picture our average progressive turning to religion in order to justify why they are good and you are bad.

You know that little yellow face man?

That's God. And he's obviously pissed. He magically rolls back prices but yet you nonbelievers still refuse to cave in.

Pretty soon he will stop smiling and you know what happens then.....

Edited on Sun Jun-25-06 11:08 PM by Doctor Venmkan
You're right, they can't see past themselves! >_<

I once read in a pharmacy magazine that a customer got upset at a 30-minute wait for her prescription. Just then, an elderly woman in the store collapses of a heart attack. The pharmacist runs over to tend to her and help keep her comfortable till the ambulance arrives. While she is trying to help the elderly woman, this highly callous bitch comes back up to the pharmacist and has the nerve to ask her if this means it will take LONGER to fill her script! Alas, the pharmacist said she bit her tongue on what she WANTED to say: "Not if she dies right now, but if she lives then yes."

Part of me finds the story hard to swallow....but yeah, there are plenty enough selfish a-holes in the world for me to buy it.

4. ROFLMAO!
Noah, I wish you were my son. You show a maturity of age that I last remembered seeing during the Clinton years. The young people who came to D.C. back in the mid-1990s were so diligent, hard-working and had such a great sense of humor. I miss them.

God bless you. Hope you got through the line O.K., and the recipient appreciated your gift! :hi:

13. Hey as far as I'm concerned I am your son I'll be the kid of anyone
who 'gets' me :)

And the cashier was beaming at me and as I left I said "Don't let em get to ya"

I used to work retail pretty much through my college years and even afterwards. It's after you've had to work in customer service that you really feel their pain and can be forgiving even in moments when they do screw up if at least unintentionally.

Take care, peace

19. Noah, you are a delight, and yes - I worked in retail when I was
about your age (I was nineteen in 1974). Some things one never forgets.

My parents raised me to be polite and considerate to others, but not to take any gruff, either. Some folks just don't have any class whatsoever, do they?

I went back and re-read your post, picturing in my mind's eye your saying these words in a New York accent - and I burst out laughing all over again. ;)

Peace to you too, young man! :hippie: :toast: :yourock:

28. Well the thing is alot of transplants come out here and well
not too get too radical but it seems that either they blend in with the community, you know they try to contribute they understand they are not in NY or Boston or anywhere near the east coast for that matter but then you get types like this woman who sort of prey on what can called "Simple people" you know native Arizonians that although they come in different styles and everything just like anyplace, you know the culture is not as demanding as far as or as pushy as in the larger east coast cities. You know it's common out here to greet people before you get down to business kind of thing-something even I myself had to adapt to long ago.

This woman is from that group that thinks that because she got away with her little tude back home she can treat the little country folk like crap cause they never saw the big lights, ect, and well I don't believe in that and I hate it when I see other New Yorkers doing that. Likewise I don't appreciate the stereotypes that get lauched at me even from my co-workers (once an older woman said to me that she doesn't trust me cause of me being a NYer) but at the same time so long as you've planted in an area you learn the culture you adapt to it as best as you can and if it doesn't suit you then move which I do plan to do someday, but untill then, I understand that certain ways of doing things that I may have been used to up North just don't fly very well down here in the Southwest. That kind of behavior that she displayed however I don't believe should fly anywhere-in fact she's lucky it was me who confronted her and not my old college pal who is from New Jersey :)

Well you take care Ma, I'm off to a wedding see ya!

37. Have fun, "Son" - be careful driving, there's a lot of nuts on the road
Here's a little story before you go:

My best friend from high school came up to visit a few years' back. She moved from Northern Virginia to a suburb of Dallas, Texas in the mid-1980s. One day during her visit, we decided to go shopping and do some reminiscing over lunch.

We were standing in line at a local department store, waiting to pay for our items, still chatting and guffawing away about goofy things we did thirty-six years ago. During a break in our conversation, we picked up on the accents of people who were clearly out-of-state.

My dear friend, without missing a beat, looked at me and asked, "Oh my God, where did all these Yankees come from?" I replied, "Things have gotten a little bit different since the good ole days here, haven't they?" ;)

If I were that lady, I wouldn't underestimate those native Arizonians. They're a lot savvier than she thinks!

43. Great post, noah...!
OK, three things...

(1) I just remembered a great exchange from Terms of Endearment (stay with me, here):
Sam Burns: You're a very rude young woman. I know Douglas from the Rotary and I can't believe he'd want you treating customers so badly.
Checkout Girl: I don't think I was treating her badly.
Sam Burns: Then you must be from New York.

New Yorkers are famous for the 'tude. I'm from Long Island myself, Same difference.

(2) I've never had to deal with a "God Loves You" nutjob in public, although I read a lot about that sort of thing here on DU... I keep thinking that when the time finally come, I'll just turn on "Maggie" and whisper back in my best Jack Nicholson/Bruce Dern crazy creepy voice "YESSsss... I know He doesss...".

(3) I read all the way down to the bottom of this thread. How the hell did this degenerate into a pissing match? Damn, just when I was having fun.

6. Don't get in checkout lines after me. I'm some kinda bad voodoo
Something always, always goes wrong when I get in these lines. I just expect it now. The register breaks down, the tape runs out, no singles for change, the cashier is new and screws up the checking out process.... You name it, I jinx it for myself or any others ahead of me.

I can't believe the bitch couldn't just have some patience. She needs to cut off the caffeine.

17. Most freepers think people should step aside and let them get their
important business done. Think the are bad in stores try doctors offices and hospital emergency rooms after a 20 car pile up and its the closets hospital to accident site. I over heard one woman loudly say, "my grand father donated money to build this hospital, I should be seen before that little girl thats bleeding all over the floor, its not my fault she was in an accident". Then people wonder why people won't go into the medical field.

The world is not - and I shall be forever grateful for this - that black and white. Shades of gray.

As I said, Daniel and Phillip Berrigan would be considered freepers by that sort of flawed reasoning.

So would Bob Drinan, Elizabeth McAllister, and a whole bunch of people who have given far more than any of us, I'll wager, to the left-wing causes that freepers eschew.

61. Look, I'm a liberal Christian, so I'm not
the ignorant hermit you seem to want to paint me as. I'm very well-aware of, and will be forever grateful for, the Berrigans and their fellow liberal Christian activists who have shown such courage and committment to standing up for their beliefs and being a voice for the voiceless. Especially their anti-war activism during Vietnam, when it cost them so much.

What I'm talking about is this kind of hateful, intolerant I-hate-you-but-God-loves-you-and-you'd-better-be-grateful-for-that-because-you're-going-to-hell-anyway-unlike-me-who's-perfect-and-heaven-is-only-for-the-perfect type of bullshit. THAT is quite a bit different from the likes of the Berrigans, MLK, Jr., etc.

65. On the basis of one sentence
uttered by a woman you don't even know exists, you drew all that? And if you see yourself as an ignorant hermit, well, I don't know how one would do that to oneself.

The Berrigans - who were clients and friends and more - would find that fascinating, and you don't sound like a very generous Christian to me, but if it works for you, then I'm sure your God will forgive you and embrace you.

No, there is no difference, and that's what the the New Catholic Left people would have tried to explain to you if there had been the slightest hint of a welcoming and open mind. Alas, they'd have failed. But, I was the lawyer who got them out of jail on a routine basis, so thank you for acknowledging the good works that they did. I'm sure Daniel would wish blessings on you, even today.

fellow Christian activists would never, ever have talked like that or used their religion against people like that. Ever. Since you claim to have known them, I'm really surprised you wouldn't know that. They knew that Christianity is truly all about love and peace and caring for others even if they weren't religious, and they would not have approved of this woman using her "God" like this and talking like this.

85. If she is what is commonly known as a "spirit-filled Christian,"
she must have been having a helluva bad day.

Is it a matter of life and death?

Yeah, I could die of a stroke.

If I was having a hissy fit like that I would be ashamed to admit I was a Christian, just because it makes all Christians look bad. The old saw about not just talking the talk, but walking the walk. There seem to be a lot of big talkers who don't walk the walk that fall in the freeptard column, so I understand the assumption.

And since I have to use a mobility scooter to get around, they'd have had to find something for me to write on and there's no where I could have moved to get out of the way while filling it in.

But then I'm one of those 'don't give a damn' elders you hear about. I'm too old to bother myself with the frustration I cause nasty people.

45. Oh, please, get fucking real.
If she were sick or something, she could have said something and it would have been taken care of pronto. From his description, it's obvious she wasn't sick at all, just impatient and incredibly rude. And he wasn't rude to her, SHE was the one who was rude and asking for it. He didn't swear or yell at her or anything like that. She was just impatient, rude and very self-centered. And most managers aren't going to cause a cashier grief over something like that, since most of them have had to deal with impatient, rude bitches such as that woman. She deserved every bit of what she got. People like that are becoming more and more common in lines, now, and it's about time someone said something.

48. Target should move the registry to customer service desk
Some stores have them in computer kiosks, where you can look it up yourself.

You handled yourself well with a belligerant, rude person, but Target could change things around and make it easier for everyone.

In defense of this woman, I'd say more and more people are stressed out today than ever before. Bush's abysmal governing, poor economy, rising gas prices, pinched budgets, longer working hours, less income, higher health care costs, and never-ending terror bs is really hurting Americans.

"scan" the registry sheet, and then the gift so the registry list is updated. Sometimes when the registry prints out, there is a problem with the "scanning" bar code not being dark enough. :)

46. I live in Texas
but was born and raised in New York City.

Everytime my mother comes to visit we have a scene (not so loudly) similar to yours at a cashier.

My mother starts in about how slow the cashiers are.

Meanwhile the cashier is talking to the young lady in front of us. "Shelby? Why you must be Sadie's little boy. Well look how you've grown. Say hi to your mm for me will you honey." And my mom is just steaming waiting in line.

One time we're standing there and the guy in front of us is buying a dozen eggs. The cashier tells him that he got the wrong eggs. The larger size is on sale and is actually cheaper than the ones he got. He was confused so she said, here let me get them, and she took his eggs and went to get the on-sale ones, and my mother just started smoking out of the top of her head saying, I can't beleive she left the register with people in line.

I try to warn her up front. Relax mom. Things are different down here and we like it that way.

Still funny to see though.

50. So whether she's a freeper or not,
it wouldn't like hurt you to exercise a little more generosity of spirit if not compassion toward your like elders, "Bro." So just because she behaved like an asshole is like so no reason for you to be disrespectful. So she may well not have earned that respect, but you would like have come off as a bigger and better man if like, out of deference to her age and quite possibly her ingrained freeper senility, you would like have indulged her and said something on the order of "I'm sorry to be of trouble to you ma'am. I know it's frustrating. We'll be out of your way momentarily" and simply let it go at that. Oh, and one other thing: Please don't start every sentence with "So" and overuse the word "like." It makes you sound like you're 24.

and my mother died last year at the age of eighty. I was taught a little more respect, even when the elderly occasionally overstep as they sometimes do. There is no excuse for impudence. Republicans are more at fault than Democrats, but unfortunately it extends across the board. It comes down to a failed educational system and a basic lack of respect. Nobody respects "nuthin'." And you can quote me.

I would have ignored her too. I wouldn't have bothered addressing her impatience.
Maybe she was having one of those 'pre-menopausal' moments? Maybe they need more
help at that store and she's tired of the long wait time, when she shops there.
Who knows?

But I do think the OP egged her on though. His first remark to her was just fine

I would only add that "elder" (though, I admit, not necessarily "elderly") is relative. A person who is 28, though by no means elderly, is nevertheless the elder of someone who is 8 just as a person who is 50ish is the elder of someone who is 24, and I think that respect for one's elders is a more important social cornerstone than some silly argument over queue position at the grocery store checkout. Having said that, I am nevertheless pleased to note several posters are arguing that people in their fifties are not elderly; this because I will be 58 tomorrow. Now I think of it though, that's considerably closer to 60 than it is to 50. Ugh! I'm not sure I'm really comfortable taking this to its logical conclusion! ;-)

My guess is that you embarrassed her and that she needed to save face. God is always good for that--it gave her some status, something to have over you.

For the record, you went overboard. Your comments got personal and nasty-especially the bit about her husband and attention. No need for that. Scoring a few laughs off of an old woman may have made you happy temporarily, but it's not the best behavior.

I don't think the OP was out of line at all! I say, good for him! If *I* had been working the checkout, I sure as heck would have been 'beaming' at him too for putting that arrogant scazzwag in her place!!!

I work with the public, and I've been the recipient of similar behavior, specifically a woman telling me she'd pray for my soul because ****she didn't have her new insurance card with her*** and thus I couldn't BILL her insurance and get her the medicine for her co-pay instead of the full price.

Heh, I hate asshole customers, but sometimes they're funny. Some woman was trying to get her Ambien refilled two weeks early and me and the floater pharmacist wouldn't do it. I forget what kind of fit she threw at the register in front of the dozen or so people behind her, but I know it made a lot of them crack up. They were laughing at her for being an ass, and it took EVERY bit of my self control to keep from laughing too! I finally got rid of her. Poor floater pharmacist, it tore him up for some reason. He NEVER came back. He said "MY store, there's rednecks. I can deal with that. Up here? They're all NUTS!!!"

Hahahah, good times! :)

The OP didn't go overboard -- bless him! Cashiers love it when a customer sticks up for them -- the lift to morale is great! This customer was way out of line, both the the employee and the other people in line... I myself stick up for other customers and for retail workers... someone has to!

The woman wasn't actually "old," either... and, even being 101 doesn't give you license to be an ass. Being inconvenienced also doesn't give you license to be an ass... bad service gives you the right to complain, but not be an ass. And, there wasn't even bad service here.

92. You can tell about about a person by observing how s/he treats
service workers--people who have less power and can't fight back.

If they treat such people badly, that's a pretty good sign that person is an asshole.

96. Age is no excuse for rudeness and bad manners
As someone who is in the 70's, I have discovered that many of my long-time peers who were more into themselves than others during our youth only became moreso....nasty and ruder as they aged. Man does not always become sweeter as they ripen....such as fruit.

I have observed my teenage grandchildren, who have been taught to respect their elders as well as all others they come into contact with, open doors, pull out chairs, move aside to allow easy access to others, etc., etc., and then get rebuffed by the old farts that they just helped. My grandkids have taken it all in stride without comment, but I, their elderly grandparent, ponder what their grandchildren (if they have any) are like.

Was this old fart driving? And if so, she should be considered a danger to others if she has this mentality while operating a vehicle.

I think you handled yourself very well......and you also gave recognition to the clerk who was only doing her job.

99. I had an old man get mad once in one of those 10 items or less lines.
Edited on Mon Jun-26-06 10:28 AM by newportdadde
The store was real quite it was early in the morning and my wife got into line. We didn't realize until halfway through our items it was an express line. Man in his late 60s comes up and goes "She shouldn't be in this line she has too many things!" I count the items... we had 12 items.

Sure I'm not the nicest most sensitive guy and I can be over the top I admit that I'm not perfect! but c'mon who the hell is she? miz Holier Than Thou over here? When she gets to heaven she'll probably tell God "Hi, you better look at my profile before you address me common, and what's more bitch you're in my seat!"

but I think most of the people who didn't object to what I said probably got it, but I'm glad you outright acknowledged the irony.

I think the person you're talking about near this thread essentially berated me for calling this hag a freeper when I was primarily basing it off of THIS statement that she made
not so much the God Bless You crap she spewed.

Even after I point this out I'M the one who doesn't get out enough ya know?

123. FYI, that woman doesn't represent me as a Christian. Just wanted y'all to
know.

I'm not sure if that makes her a freeper, as she didn't say "God bless George Bush" but it does make her the type of Christian that makes me not want to tell people I'm a Christian. Or the type of Christian who, when I see their bumperstickers, makes me cringe even though I supposedly share their faith. A Cathy Lee Gifford type of Christian who means "Fuck you" when they say to someone like Howard Stern "I'll pray for you" even though he had a point about her displaying her kids.

The type of Christian that makes my teeth itch.

You're probably right though. Probably a freeper. None of the people in my church act like that, and they're mostly liberal Lutherans. Thank God.

132. Not all Christians act like that, but the group of Christians who pull the
"God Bless you but I hate you" type act when they are losing the argument are ALWAYS freepers. ALWAYS.

That was the point which unfortunately has been misunderstood by a few on here-but I'm glad you got it.

I'm not a Christian and even I get pissed to see people of your flock get represented by demons like this woman.
