Black leaders plan to protest against Christian conservatives

By Julia Glick
ASSOCIATED PRESS

2:09 a.m. June 27, 2006

DALLAS – Prominent black leaders said they will work to combat Christian conservatives they say have used gay marriage and abortion to distract from larger moral issues such as the war, voting rights, affirmative action and poverty.

The Revs. Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Joseph Lowery and hundreds of black leaders from around the country are focusing on mobilizing black voters for the fall elections. They kicked off a three-day black clergy conference Monday in Dallas.

7. Jackson has been working with the victims of NOLA
To get them re-employed and housed in NO instead of some far away state, and to get the vote out to as many of the NO displaced residents as he possibly can.

Just because YOU don't see him doing good works why do you assume that he is not? I don't see you doing good works, am I to assume that you are not?

2. Good for them
These are christians with the welfare of mankind on their agenda. Unlike, the right wing scum whose religion is based on hate.

3. I am DELIGHTED to hear this. I will definitely be involved...
Now for the certain huge backlash. Let's see how this will be re-framed and African Americans will be made to appear as the "bad guys."

4. I hate comparison of the gravity of moral issues though
affirmative action is a "larger" issue than basic rights to our own property and jobs?

If by larger it impacts more people I would agree on semantics, but to my mind, larger means an issue that impacts more people's lives in directly measurable ways.

Unfortunate wording - I actually saw something about this last month; anti-gay marriage people were pissed off too. At least just addressing this on its face means that they're having to address it in thought.

But don't ask for my support if you're trivializing the moral issues that impact my life, whatever color or creed, in place of your own.

5. God bless 'em
They are a lot closer to the teachings of christ than the southren babtists. Maybe even Jackson can redeem himself after the sorry spectacle he put on during the Schiavo clusterfuck.

6. On second thought though...
Jackson has recently been doing things just for the spotlight, this just might be another attempt to turn the attention on him, God I hope not this could be our big chance to nail them. We CANNOT screw this up

8. Indeed, I agree with your first statement
Jackson has been working with the victims of NO (see post # 7), and the unfortunate thing is that when he does good work largely behind the scenes, people like post # 6 accuse him of doing nothing, but that same poster accuses him when he does work in public view of doing it for the "spotlight".

I, too, was disappointed in Jackson's involvement in the Schiavo debacle, but in a lifetime of service he has done a lot of good. For that, I am grateful. :)

12. IMO, Jesse Jackson has done more in 2 minutes

to champion Civil Rights Causes than others have done in a life time.

He has done more to get out the Black VOTE than anyone that I can recall.
He was there every step of the way when Clinton was in deep trouble. He was there for the Cinton family and for Democrats.

I don't bash him, I praise him.

I was in San Francisco as a delegate for Jesse Jackson when he ran for President. It was amazing!

Many of the African Americans that worked 24 hours a day for him during that powerful time have since gone into politics or work passionately for progressive political causes. JESSE taught us well!

I recall fondly helping to staple signs with his sons. Jesse Jr. got his start at that convention as a little boy.

His other son, Johnathan, is a very successful business man.

Jessie worked to get Wall Street to open its doors to minorities and we should all be proud of his work in this area.

He does more good behind the scenes than you will ever know.

Does he have an ego? Sure he does.

Egos seem to be fine when it's a WASP male but when you're the color of Jesse Jackson, that is seen as "trying to steal the spotlight."
