Soldiers didn't fight and die for flags.
Flags are pieces of cloth that are used as symbols. I can't believe we almost amended the Constitution of the United States of America in order to take away the right to express oneself by burning cloth.

I've seen several accounts that state that there were a grand total of FOUR reported flag-burning incidents in the U.S. last year. We've had an unprecedented consolidation of power in the executive branch, our election systems are flawed and corruptible, we are running unsustainable budget deficits and oil companies are writing our foreign policy.

But FLAG BURNING is a Constitutional crisis. And lots of "Democrats" voted in favor of the first Amendment to take rights away from citizens since alcohol prohibition.

Wake up.

1. It is posturing for the fall election. I can't believe it was so close
Hey you Dems who voted for this, who the hell are you posturing for? Why?

2. Finally, someone who gets it. I took a lot of flak about this around
Memorial Day.

The flag is NOT my country.

4. Yeah. I just had a discussion with my son's 13 year old friend who said
Edited on Tue Jun-27-06 06:06 PM by in_cog_ni_to
that my son was wrong for not standing for the pledge during school and he was disrespecting our country by not doing so. Then he went on to say my son was also disrepectful for turning his back on an assembly when they sang The Star Spangled Banner. The child just didn't understand the difference between a piece of cloth, the country and what it's SUPPOSE to stand for, a song and the Government. I set him straight.:)

8. I did that in 1969. Because I'm an Indian.
I refused to acknowledge the Pledge, because it was for a flag and country that was not mine.

You can imagine the flak I got, back then. But of course the school wouldn't suspend me because I had a 4.0 GPA. Politics at work, as always.

3. You know, I gotta disagree here...
I do think soldiers of wars that involved our rights fought and died for Free Speech and I can't think of a greater statement of Free Expression or Free Speech than burning the flag.

I've actually talked to WWII vets about this and most of the ones I talked to hate to see it burned but feel they fought for the right of the asshole who wants to burn it to actually to do it.

9. Well, I don't know how I could have said it more clearly..

"they fought for the right of the asshole who wants to burn it to actually to do it."

I think they actually did fight for the Flag and the ability for a free citizen to make a statement by burning it.

10. Well so did everyone before you!
I guess I was confused by a title line that said "I guess I gotta disagree." Thanx for explaining it to me, never knew what I was doing there.

6. Fought for the right to burn flags, but not for the flag itself.
They fought for free speech, not to protect this piece of cloth.
