does anyone have the URL for the SWIFT website?

I have been hearing some cons counter that SWIFT was already known with a claim that the NYT gave details about the program that weren't known and that it was still classified.

OF course now I hear that SWIFT has a web site and a MAGAZINE! And I have not yet been able to find the SWIFT website on google (guess I'm not using the right key words or maybe it's gone) so does anyone have the URL?

I am trying to figure out what the NYT said in it's article on this that wasn't already known, especially if it was mentioned on SWIFT's website.

SWIFT -from my understanding- might be an acronym for the program but the program entails COOPERATION with a Brussels-based enitity named Swift. Swift handles network transactions and messaging for banks in Europe. Kind of a TELNET deal. Swift began to monitor transactions in cooperation with the US shortly after 911.

SWIFT is an organization formed by banks to handle international banking transactions. It is not just limited to European banks but has members all over the world including almost all of the larger US banks (the bank I worked for was a member).

The SWIFT network has been around for at least 20 years and is the quickest, cheapest and most secure method of moving money around the world electronically. Multinational corporations are also well aware of SWIFT because they use SWIFT transactions through a member bank on a daily basis.

Why anyone would be surprised that the US government would be monitoring transactions of suspected terrorists is beyond me. The banks which are members of SWIFT have a financial interest in preventing another attack on a large financial center such as NYC, because many have branch offices in financial centers around the world. There were several branches of foreign banks headquartered in the World Trade Center.

After 9-11 I assumed that the US government would ask SWIFT for assistance in tracking potential funding for terrorists. The Republicans are manufacturing outrage over something that many people, including any terrorist with half a brain, has already figured out was being done.

I think every business moving moving to another bank uses SWIFT codes. Bush told us after 9/11 that they'd be draining the financial swamp...why wouldn't they be using SWIFT codes as part of their analysis?

This is pure politics...the way it became a concerted reaction tells me this was a coordinated RW attack to try and nuetralize critical reporting of Republican crimes as well as deflect from real problems that we have. Just more putting Party before Country bullshit from the people who hate America.

OR...it could be that there is more to this than what we are hearing about from Bushco.

Something like, how we found out about the domestic wire tapping deal with NSA! At first we heard on every news show on TV, from EVERY GOP mouthpiece and GOP congress skunk, that the NSA program only spied on incoming and outbound international calls and communications. Later we found out that the NSA was also listening in on Calls and Emails that were totally domestic in nature, contrary to the lies that we were first told. So have the feds been watching everyone's banking transactions in the country and again lying to cover up this latest discovery, of yet another invasion of our privacy?

I remember, when we first brought up our questions here, about whether the NSA was tapping domestic calls, we were met with an endless barrage of insults, about being "Conspiracy Theorists," but it turned out in the end, that the truth was every bit as strange and as shocking, as our "theories" were at first thought by some to be...

I believe NOTHING I cannot see with my own eyes about Bushco. Trust Bush? Where has that blind trust gotten us so far? I'll keep a tight chin strap on my tinfoil Stetson...but not tight enough to shut off the circulation to my brain.

If congress trusts Bush on this banking thing, they are too stupid to serve, OR PROTECT, America.

I'm at a 24 guage now. Next move will be into stamped 1/4" aluminum plate.
