How many children did you guess were expelled from school for bringing a firearm? 50? 100?

400?

1,000?

According to the U.S. Department of Education's latest figures possible, in 2002, more than 2,500 children were expelled from school for a period of one year for bringing a firearm to school.

Statistics like this should give us pause and ask, "Why and how are children getting their hands on guns?" Often the source is from the home.

Take a look at what's at stake for our children's safety.

> In Platte City, Missouri, two Kansas City area teenagers were charged with threatening to carry out a school shooting to mark the seventh anniversary of the attack at Columbine High School.

> Only two days later on April 22, six students at North Pole Middle School in Alaska were arrested for plotting to kill faculty and classmates using guns.

> And just last week, a former Parker High School student threatened to create "another Columbine" by bringing a 12-gauge shotgun to school.

The spread of guns has to stop-- and we must keep guns out of the hands of young people and children.

As a member of the Freedom States Alliance, please take the time RIGHT NOW to send this alert to five friends, and get them involved in our mission to "Change the Way America Thinks About Guns" and stop the toll of gun violence.

This is a wake-up call for Americans to stop the next Columbine massacre.

You're already a reciepient of a Freedom States Alliance Newsletter, but please take the time right now to send this information to five friends, and get them involved in our mission.

They'll learn what you just did: that thousands of childrens' lives are ruined by firearms in our nation's schools. And maybe, with your help, they'll be convinced to do what you've already done: joined the fight to end gun violence in America.

1. Tax breaks for safe gun storage devices, public service announcements
Educate people about the dangers of failing to secure their weapons, and make it easier for people to afford robust gun storage devices.

3. That's not what I'm suggesting

Mandatory gun locks would not be appropriate for everyone in every situation. A classic "one size fits none" solution IMO.

Some states do have safe-storage laws. California's makes it a crime if your gun gets taken by someone under 16, and someone gets injured or killed as a result. It does not specify how you must store your weapons. And I am OK with that.
