WTF: "...he grew animated and frequently raised his voice..."????!!!!
When the New York Times reports about a * speech, do they say, "he grew twitchy and frequently ground his jaw" in the first line of the second paragraph?!

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/01/16/politics/16cnd-gore.html

In an hour-long speech during which he grew animated and frequently raised his voice, Mr. Gore called on the attorney general to appoint a special counsel to investigate the matter and recommended that Congress hold "comprehensive - not just superficial - hearings."

2. I guess I don't see that description as negative or critical.
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 09:57 PM by ocelot
Because that's exactly what he did -- he spoke with animation and passion, and that's a good thing. What would have pissed me off is if they'd described him as boring and monotonous, like they always used to do.

8. I agree. Animated & inflected = human & angry . . .
but then I remember Paul Simon's Boxer: ". . . all lies and jest still a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest," and I understand how readers on DU see so many sides of every sentence.

9. They're feeding the Limbaugh/Hannity spin machines.
Limbaugh/Hannity ALWAYS harp that Gore goes off on rants anymore. Then go into their fake cry-baby whine and project that Gore's complaining that he lost in 2000.

It's a horrid thing for the Times to put in an article.

There are many other ways to express that Gore spoke decisively.

30. Hey, if I were giving one of the best political speeches in
American history, I'd be a bit impassioned my self. The Republicans have staged a coup d'etat. Damn right Gore and the rest of us are very impassioned. How could one not be?

17. So what? No matter what anybody says, those asshats will spin it.
And if there's nothing to spin they'll just make shit up. The NYT's description struck me as neutral and accurate, and the hate radio assholes like Limpballs will say what they want anyhow. Nobody, not even the NYT, should report or describe anything based on what they think those pricks will say. Fuck 'em.

28. It's not what the NY Times will think they'll say. It *is* the NY times
*saying* it!

There are other ways to express Gore's speech w/o stooping to inflammatory descriptions like that that end up feeding the RW trolls. Of course the Times knew what it was doing.

5. Democrats are damned if they do show emotion and damned if they don't.
Edited on Mon Jan-16-06 09:57 PM by Eric J in MN
After giving a speech, the media knocks them for being stiff or knocks them for being strident.

Al Gore wasn't stiff, and so Keith Olbermann's first guest (a guy from Newsweek, I didn't catch his name but it will be on the MSNBC website with the transcript in 24 hours) called him "strident."

32. No. Just because the Pubs don't like it, it doesn't mean that
Gore was damned. He gave a glorious speech and any literate person who heard or read it knows that.

21. I wrote song lyrics called "Hope is A Place"
I don't have music for it, just the words so far :)

Hope Is A Place

(Verse one)
Did you wake up one day with livin’ on your mind
Thought you had been livin’ all this time
Your family, your friends you really love them,
True.
Yet that’s not all the livin’ there’s left to do

(Chorus)
To make a difference
To change this world
To love when love cannot be returned
To know that some live on a dime
To give our most precious gift
Our time
To teach our children compassionate grace
And let them know hope is a place

(Verse two)
Who’s helping who when we give of ourself
Who of us wished the cards we were dealt
Behind the human struggle lives a smile
it's by giving we forget ours for a while

(Chorus)
To make a difference
To change this world
To love when love cannot be returned
To know that some live on a dime
To give our most precious gift
Our time
To teach our children compassionate grace
And let them know hope is a place

(Verse Three)
Will there always be tears and hungry souls
We don’t know how this world will go
The seed of Time seems impossible to grow
Can we plant one today to reap what we sow

(Chorus)
…Take my hand
Lets sow a smile, lets sow a hug,
Lets sow a world for our children to love
To make a difference
To change this world
To love when love cannot be returned
To know that some live on a dime
To give our most precious gift
Our time
To teach our children compassionate grace
And let them know hope is a place…
Hope is a place…compassionate grace…
Lets hope...Hope Is A Place

19. Feeds into the stereotypes
that we heard about previous Gore speeches... that he was "ranting" and so on...

Words are very specific, and their power can't be underestimated.... The question is why DIDN'T the NY Times use sympathetic terms like "passionate" or "bold".

I used to think people were picking on the NY Times unfairly, but after the last couple years of severe disappointments in their ethical lapses, I don't raise an objection when I hear people rip them.

16. As was appropriate
Given his subject matter.

It's a far cry from the old critique of Gore as "wooden."

I like the new animated Gore, who raises his voice. I raise mine with him!

It is making a splash on the evening talk fest/news. That means Gore truly hit a sore spot and the repubs feel they need to rebut.

He's just a crazy ranting fool! He is actually clinically insane. Out on a furlough from an involuntary commitment at Bellview. Has a friend he calls "The Chief". Don't listen to him. He is crazy. If you listen to him, you must be crazy too!
