Gore Says Bush Broke the Law With Spying
Warrantless Surveillance an Example of 'Indifference' to Constitution, He Charges

By Chris Cillizza
Special to The Washington Post
Tuesday, January 17, 2006; Page A03

Former vice president Al Gore accused President Bush of breaking the law by authorizing wiretaps on U.S. citizens without court warrants and called on Congress yesterday to reassert its oversight responsibilities on a "shameful exercise of power" by the White House.

"The president of the United States has been breaking the law repeatedly and insistently," Gore said in a speech at Constitution Hall in Washington. "A president who breaks the law is a threat to the very structure of our government."

To restore a system of checks and balances to government, Gore proposed appointing a special counsel to look into the domestic surveillance program, developing new whistle-blower protections and not extending the Patriot Act. He urged members of Congress, only one of whom -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) -- was present, to "start acting like the independent and coequal branch of government you're supposed to be."

1. Wow! This is a truly EXCELLENT article!
And it's not buried on page B17. It's on A03, which almost everyone who gets the paper actually READS! Granted it should be on A01 above the fold, with a picture, but given the kind of coverage we've gotten in the past, this is remarkable!

2. President Gore's State of the Union Address on Jan 16 2006
It was a magnificent speech only the true statesman could give.

Re-elect President Gore in 2008!

3. He has credibility not only for who he is,
but also because of the fact that he hasn't hammered Bush consistently since the election was stolen from him. They can't say "sour grapes".

4. Well, I'll be damned.
Who is this Chris Cillizza?

That's a mighty fine lead there. Yep.

5. "Hubby-on-the-war-payroll DiFi" was the only Senator present?
For shame, for shame! What a sorry lot we have representing us. Only one shows up, and it's DINO Di-Fi, bush apologist extraordinaire. :(

6. She wasn't the only one there.
According to one of the DUers who was present, Boxer was there also. There may have been more.

7. Thank you.
Can't trust the so-called MSM, can we? It hurt to think that Al Gore could give such a fiery speech, following in the footsteps of those who first established this country, and not have Congressional members present to witness this historic event.

But I still want Di-Fi to hit the highway and not look back.

11. The first 6 or 7 rows were reserved for VIP types

Room for many more than the senators from California.

And, those rows were filled.

8. I'm thinking the same thing.
Good luck if you expect Di-Fi to take Congress back as a co-power. I don't think she can get up off her knees anymore.

10. That's it. You are correct. If the Dems would decide to go
ahead and nominate him now. There would be no need to waste 100's of millions trying to gain the nomination. And, Gore isn't going to go through a long drawn out primary campaign and he shouldn't have to.

Think about how confused the Pubs would be if the Dems got together early and nominated Gore. There would be huge advantages to that and some disadvantages. The swift boaters could not hurt Gore this time. He as learned a lot about politics since the 2000 race.
