bush* is Lex Luthor...
Having gone to see, "Superman Returns", this past weekend, I couldn't help but notice the obvious metaphor that is being implied by the film makers. Perhaps it wasn't their intention, but the parallels are a little to coincidental to me.

Lex Luthor played by Kevin Spacey intones, "bring them on!", is a display of bravado in referring to the rest of the world and how he feels about their reaction to his diabolical evil plan.

But that aside for a moment, if bush* is Lex Luthor, who else rounds out the cast? Who or what is Superman? Superman to me represents our Democracy. Lois Lane, the Democrats and Luther's thugs, the republicans.

Spoilers follow for those who haven't seen the movie.

In the second half of the film, after building his new continent, Luthor lures Superman there. The continent is a land mass infused with Kryptonite. Thus upon arriving, Superman, unknown to him, is powerless. He only finds this out when he promptly gets his ass kicked by Luthors thugs.

So what do we have here? We have an over confident Democracy, riding on it's laurels expecting all citizens to respect it's might, it's freedoms and its liberty. Democracy is a constant work in progress, it must be supported each and everyday, otherwise we fall into the trap that Superman found himself in.

Luthor (bush*) gives the command, and his thugs (republican's) go to work in taking out the over confident unsuspecting Superman (democracy).
When all seems bleak and it appears as if Superman is dead, Lois (Democrats), comes to the rescue. Through her inactions, she sees what she could have lost, although almost a bit to late, helps revive Superman, allowing him to regain his strength and defeat Luthor and his henchmen.

I look upon this tale as a metaphor to what we are currently going through. Democracy was certainly down, and appeared out for the count, but we the people have begun to speak up again.

The slanted Supreme Court even gave us all a surprise when then ruled against bush* concerning Gitmo.

Things are changing.

Having faith and belief in Democracy is wonderful but without real work, constant support and determination, we still maybe able to loose it.

Granted I'm a big time Superman geek and I have always had that naive sense that people are basically good. The republicans have shown us otherwise.

Many people have always wanted to believe in that one all be all candidate, senator or representative that will deliver us from the current government oppression. The reality is: that person doesn't exist, because a Democratic society is a group effort.

There is no one Superman, but there are millions of us in this country that are working hard to recapture our Democracy. So in a way there are millions of supermen and women who fight each and everyday to keep our hope alive.

Never before has the term, "We the people" meant so much to me as it does now. And if we have one super power, it is the power to change things for the better.

4. Except in the movie...
... Lex Luthor is actually curious and reads books to satisfy his curiousity. Also, he knows who Prometheus is whereas Asshole couldn't pronounce Prometheus if he tried.

9. Well, I went to see the Wild Bunch when I was 8 so I'm not one to ask.
:)

I don't have kids, but I would take an 8 yr old to see it. There are no blood and guts spewing everywhere and no one really swears, there are a few dark moments but it's part of the story.

8. Even thought I don't read them anymore
I am still often informed what's going on in the comics world by friends. I hardly think it a coincidence that when Bush became president in 2000, so did Lex Luthor in the DC Comics Universe. He eventually went batshit crazy after trying to smear Superman and Batman, escaped, and left his veep to step up to being president (who eventually resigned as well).

The nowhere-as-critically-acclaimed sequel to the Graphic Novel, "The Dark Knight Returns," which was about Batman in his late 50s, had Luthor as a Cheney-esque figure in charge of a president that turned out to be a hologram. Superheroes were outlawed; the Congress had passed the Freedom from Information Act, and there were several caricatures of politicians and pundits that looked like Ashcroft, Ari Fleischer ("the president just got a look at his poll numbers, and he doesn't have to say dick to you guys"), Novak, George Will, Imus, etc.
