Wealthy Americans have their problems too

LIKE SARDINES: Docking space for big yachts is at a premium in Newport Beach. Demand for this liquid real estate is expected to grow, with California adding as many as 23,000 boats a year. (LA Times 7/8/06)

While in Iraq:

Iraqis mourn two brothers killed Sunday in a car bombing near a Shiite mosque in Baghdad. The attack was apparently in retaliation for the slayings of more than 50 Sunni Arabs earlier in the day. Many Iraqis expressed fear that the sectarian violence is building into civil war. (By Mohammed Hato -- Associated Press)

"Civil war". I remember that phrase popping up around here way back when the administration was demanding that Saddam "disarm"...

1. Interesting juxtaposition of images
Somewhat meaningless, of course. We didn't invade Iraq to get more yacht space.

3. We invaded Iraq to get more yachts, tho.
I use yacht purchasing as an analogy all the time.

For example: My company has frozen pay increases, but the CEO just got a new yacht.

And of course, they're not bombing each other to give it to us!

2. Unlike others, I understand what you are saying.
Many wealthy Americans also are benefitting off of this war too. How did that person buy their yacht?

4. we gave that CEO tax breaks to buy their yacht
and cut social programs to benefit the needy. People are going without health care, retirement, adequate education, jobs programs in order to fund that yacht.

Misery-funded luxury... Profiting at the expense of the vulnerable.

Greed. Selfishness. Hard hearted ness.

6. The rich have run into the law of diminishing returns
Edited on Tue Jul-11-06 10:32 AM by Warpy
and they're not only squabbling over docking space, they've driven up the prices of everything they thought they'd be able to snap up easily: resort real estate, antiques, art, and all the junk they hold dear. That's why no rich man ever has enough, and why they will continue to grab, even if they have to step over our starved bodies to get to it.

It's why we had a progressive tax, inheritance tax, and luxury taxes.

Until we bring those things back, expect to see even worse juxtapositions of images, epecially when both images are from our own country. Or it used to be ours.
