WOW! Paper: Army to end Halliburton deal
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The Army will discontinue its multi-billion dollar contract with oil services giant Halliburton Co. to provide logistical support to U.S. troops worldwide, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Halliburton, formerly run by Vice President Dick Cheney, has drawn scrutiny for its work in Iraq from auditors, congressional Democrats and the Justice Department, which is investigating potential overcharges for fuel, dining and laundry services.

Texas-based Halliburton is the world's second-largest oil services company and the U.S. military's biggest contractor in Iraq. The logistical support is performed by Halliburton engineering and construction unit Kellogg Brown & Root. Last year, the Army paid the company more than $7 billion under the contract, the Post said.

Army officials defended the company's performance but said Pentagon leaders decided multiple contractors would give them better prices, more accountability and greater protection if a one contractor fails to perform, the newspaper said

It took them this long to figure out that multiple bids would reduce the cost??

1. Is the military striking back?
First, the unqualified acceptance of the SC ruling, now shutting Halliburton out? They know nobody's gonna argue with saving taxpayer's money.

Your move, Rummy.

2. Top brass don't like the idea of joining Cheney in jail?
No matter what they say and do in the present, there will be a day of reckoning in the future.

4. That's exactly what I was thinking.
If these ties are being severed now, it makes me believe that some big scandal is in the hopper.

5. Their services are ESSENTIAL!
Everyone knows that our troops require cloth napkins with the halliburton logo on them. They don't need clean drinking water, food or body armor, but they need those napkins! :sarcasm: :hi:

13. Slopped paint on a bunch of buildings
at $10 million a pop, never fixed the electric or water. Doesn't matter, they got their money, Cheney is richer, so who cares? Support the troops. Rah, rah, booosh!

8. More smoke & mirrors
This appears to be an election year ploy to make it seem as though they are cracking down on the corruption:

According to the report, the Pentagon plans to split the Iraq work among three companies to be chosen this fall and Halliburton would be eligible to make a bid.

A fourth firm would be hired to help monitor the performance of the three contractors selected, the newspaper said.

So theoretically, Halliburton could get the contract to oversee the contracts. Slimey bastards.

10. Just a Distraction...
The money, and probably an increased amount of it (despite claims of taking bids), will just be channeled to another ultra-wealthy controlled corporation. The names will be changed to protect their identities... Nothing more than Political cover for the elections...

11. They've figured out that.....
Halliburton got "theirs" and now that it's REALLY dangerous in Iraq it's time for their buddies to come home. This point of view just saves face for Halliburton. Plus, the start up time for the new contracts gives the administration an excuse for projects not getting done in a timely manner. It will be interesting to see who is dumb enough to serve up employees for service in the most dangerous country in the world......or is that Israel?
