Poll question: Why do you call her Hilary?
As an occasional defender of the nonsense and false accusations that are often hurled her way, I'm not at all offended by the common misspelling of her name on this board. I'm just curious.

It can't always be because you can't fit all the letters in the title of a thread, since I see the same misspelling of her name within many many posts, too.

I could understand getting Lieberman's name wrong or even Feingold's, perhaps, but Hillary? C'mon.

So....do you misspell her name out of disrespect, or is it simply out of ignorance of the correct spelling? An inquiring mind would like to know.

thrash Hillary Clinton and get away with it...using the excuse it's an easy distinction of the Clinton's to use Hillary--not to be confused with Bill.

If this were not true then why in every republican fundraiser is Senator Clinton referred to as Hillary?

Why does Fox news and pigman Limbaugh and the rest of the right-wing talking heads always and only use "Hillary"

You think it's just an accident...it's to insult, demean, hate and raise big bucks from fearful republican donors.

9. Well I usually call her Hillary to distinguish her
from the former President, rather than typing "President Clinton" and "Senator Clinton" every time I am talking about one of them. I don't do it out of disrespect at all.

2. I don't think people mean anything by it.
It's just an easy mistake to make, that's all. I've done it myself more than once. Spelling that name with only one 'l' seems to be more commonplace.

3. I endorse other DUers' use of "Senator Clinton" instead of just her
first name.

Using just her first name, however spelled, seems to reduce her to a caricature instead of an accomplished, professional woman.

Our male candidates usually receive the benefit of their last names. Biden on MEET THE PRESS. Bayh on FACE THE NATION. Etc. Barbara Boxer is 'Boxer' and never 'Barbara.'

I'd renew the proposal to accord female candidates the same status as male candidates. "Senator Clinton" or "HClinton" -- etc.

10. "Hillary" avoids confusion between the Clintons. Her website :Hillary
for Senate.

It's borderline trademark like, Cher or Madonna. I think she's okay with it.

the way it appears on her website.

It's when Rush and Hannity et al use it as a perjorative...

19. same here -it's the lazy way to differentiate between the Clintons
in a post - outside DU (ie LTTE etc), I would say Senator Clinton, to repespect her positiom. The opposite is the reason I write Bush or George Bush rather than President in many cases.

"saddam" rather than hussein.

they had more respect for adolf hitler.

ever hear anyone refer to him as solely "adolf" (on teevee or in history books)?

Had she divorced and/or just changed her last name, she might have recieved the greater respect of one named Hillary Rodham.

26. I always thought "Hilary" was the masculine version of the name.
It was my grandfather's first name. He was the only Hilary I ever knew so I don't consider myself an expert. Yes, I don't think the misspelling is meant to be disrepectful either.

14. I reject the premise of the poll.
I, like most people on DU, don't talk about her at all until someone else brings her up, like the republicans who are trying to frame her as the Democratic candidate for president in '08. When I do, I usually use her last name, not her first, and spelling errors are coincidental, not intentional.

of power by their first name, while males tend to be referred to by their last name.

17. She wasnt in power when she aquired that name (by the public)
The world got to know Hillary when she was first lady, with no constitution power.

Add in that she played with her last name changing around from Rodham, Clinton, Rodham-Clinton, Clinton again, its really just easier to call her Hillary. I assume her official name is Clinton, but honestly Im not positive as it might actually be Rodham-Clinton.

Now that she is a Senator and presidential candidate, she undoubtably deserves to be called Senator Clinton, but old habits die hard.

If heaven forbid, Laura Bush goes to NY, or some other state and becomes a Senator, then presidential candidate, the world will proably still call her Laura still.

28. My question wasn't about why people call Sen. Clinton "Hilary"; it was why
people tend to refer to women in power by their first name, whereas they tend to refer to men in power by their last name (this doesn't apply to just politicians, either).

18. Other: Because that's her name.
If I want to be specific about which Hilary I'm talking about, I'll include a last name:

Hilary Swank, an actress I think I saw in a rather dark movie some years back.

Hillary Clinton, the former first lady, now NY senator and still a favorite target for a media circus. Of course, she doesn't exactly go out of her way to avoid the attention, imo.

A point I've always wished the parents of my students could "get:"

It's the same name no matter how many ways you spell it. You say it the same, it sounds the same, and keeping track of which spelling goes with which individual can be a royal pain in the ass. Which is why I never comment when someone spells my name conventionally, instead of adding the extra vowel my mom included.

20. You mean that people are only putting one L instead of two?
You think that's a sign of disrespect? I suppose it could be the case for some, but that really seems unlikely to me.

I can tell you that based on my experience and that of people I know, people misspell names ALL THE TIME and it's very, very rarely a sign of disrespect. Many people are just plain bad spellers, and usually it has nothing to do with intelligence.

If you're looking to start a thread about why people don't like Hillary, I'm not sure that questioning people on why they don't put the correct number of Ls in her name is going to net much worthwhile information.

Edited on Thu Jul-13-06 08:18 PM by Raine
cause I think whether you respect someone or not they deserve to have their given name spelled as it was intended.

EDIT: If you are asking not about spelling but the tendency to call a woman politician by her first name instead of full title, yeah I plead guilty to that. I'm not sure why but being a woman myself maybe it's cause I feel more of a kinship or closeness to a woman politician than a male one especially when they are Democratic. I'm not sure why and have given it some thought before but that's all I could come up with, really. I think I feel more fond and familar with them.
