Is there a link to the Putin "democracy" comment?
According to the BBC this morning, Putin responded to *s democracy blathering by saying that he certainly didn't want the kind of democracy * set up in Iraq.

Can anyone confirm this? Any video links?

1. I'm sorry I don't have a link, I too want to see/read ........
.....that. I'll bet that is priceless. Putin is good at getting in a zinger or two at idiot boy's expense. One time he made a comment about US elections and Russia deciding their elections with one vote per person instead of the courts doing it. I've got to find that quote.

2. I swear they said it this morning
I was still mainlining my morning coffee, but the BBC 6:00 mentioned Putin's zinger. Can't find it on the Internets, though. Maybe it just happened?

As I type this the Today show is running the clip with Putin saying that and the audience is laughing.

W is a jackass, the world knows it, and now they

don't bother whispering about it.

3. just heard it on French radio, I can confirm
they basically said that :

Bush made a particularly akward performance
Putin countered with irony

When GW took Iraq as an example for "the progress of democracy", Putin countered by something like
"if this is democracy, Russia can be without it"...

looking for links too

Edited on Sat Jul-15-06 06:02 AM by spinbaby
Russian news source that says simply, "Putin said at the news conference that Russia needed no Iraq-type democracy."

I wonder what *'s reaction was. I wonder what the reporters' reaction was. Damn, we need video.

5. I have been hoping someone would post about this. Didn't
entirely catch the translation, heard "Iraq" and then the guffaws from the press corps, a lot more than the polite laughter usually seen when some politico makes a quip. It was shortly after 5 a.m. Eastern, don't ask why I was up.

12. I heard the conference live
Putin was asked about the criticism of Democracy in Russia. He said "I certainly wouldn't want the kind of Democracy in Iraq". Everyone started laughing and Bush quipped "Just wait" or something to that effect. Putin shot him a look.

Bush came across again as a frat boy playing with the reporters, talking about the nice dinner they had and thank Putin for the nice "cottage" that they are being put up in. He said "They are quite comfortable", but it sounded snide. Of course he was leaning on the podium and didn't have a coherent sentence in the conference.

It was on very early this morning, around 4:30am eastern and I was still on my first cup of coffee. I am sure that there will a video of it soon.

Putin rejects Bush's Iraq democracy model

Saturday, July 15, 2006; Posted: 6:57 a.m. EDT (10:57 GMT)

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (CNN) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has rejected a suggestion from U.S. President George W. Bush that his country should emulate democracy in Iraq.

During a joint news conference Saturday in St. Petersburg, Bush said he raised concerns about democracy in Russia during a frank discussion with the Russian leader.

"I talked about my desire to promote institutional change in parts of the world, like Iraq where there's a free press and free religion, and I told him that a lot of people in our country would hope that Russia would do the same," Bush said.

To that, Putin replied, "We certainly would not want to have the same kind of democracy that they have in Iraq, quite honestly."
