Local columnist compares Bush family to Corleone family
Bill Curry, twice the Democratic candidate for governor in Connecticut, used his column in today's Hartford Courant to compare the Bush family to the Corleone family:

Democrats Don't Really Need A Plan
July 16, 2006

Some say to win back Congress, Democrats need a plan to deal with Iraq. I'm not sure. Sometimes you win simply by default.

I do wish Democrats had a plan for getting out of Iraq, though not as much as I wish the commander in chief had one, or even some senior staffer at the Pentagon.

<snip>

After communism's fall, Bush the First put the old Soviet bloc on a path of radical deregulation, privatization and fiscal austerity without any developed civic institutions to oversee the process. Among the nations birthed are some of the worst thugocracies ever. Now it's the son who preaches what he doesn't know, trailing chaos in his wake.

You may suspect the Bush family is in the democracy export business in the same sense the Corleone family was in the olive oil import business; as a cover for other, more profitable lines of work. It's hard to prove, but for sure the Corleones knew more about olive oil than the Bushes know about democracy.

1. I like Bill. He's a smart guy and should be governor today.
Just remember that the establishment politicians who are supporting Joe Lieberman are the same pols that didn't lift a finger to help Bill. He couldn't even get a fair hearing on his warnings about corruption in the Rowland administration.

2. The media wasn't very friendly to him, either
And, while Curry is a smart guy, even his friend Colin McEnroe on WTIC makes fun of Curry's lack of charisma.

5. The comparison is crazy
A) Michael was smart
B) Michael was capable of remorse.

Bush is neither of these things and never will be.

7. His comparison was to the "business" fronts
Bush's business front is "exporting democracy" when it is really criminally enriching Halliburton, ExxonMobil, ChevronTexaco, etc.

The Corleone's front business is importing olive oil, when it's really organized crime.

The difference, he says, is that the Corleones likely were better & more knowledgeable about their front business than the Bush family.

13. I was just trying to make a joke on the sideline,
not to seriously contradict what's his name.

14. LOL
Bill Curry... he ran for governor twice here in CT (as a Democrat) and was also in the Clinton White House for a while.

6. Nice editorial.
"Incumbents fear losing their jobs. If you're a congressman, it's like the whole world's Disneyland and you're Mickey. Lose and you're cast like Lucifer from heaven. This fear inspires less sympathy but is nonetheless real.

More than anything, Democrats fear men. People fear all sorts of men; skinheads, gangsta rappers, guys at cocktail parties with nothing but golf stories. Democrats fear middle-aged white men sitting on couches shouting at TV screens, unable to distinguish among sports contests, video games and actual wars."

:patriot:

9. My thought was...
That the Courant is going to be inundated with calls from Freepers demanding an apology for comparing Bush to a fictional character.

10. Curry is brilliant.
I was probably the only person who listened to the gubernatorial debates in 2002. I just couldn't believe what happened. The appeal of stupidity never seems to end. :eyes:

Is that in this morning's Courant? I'm about to go out and grab one. :)
