Lebanon vs. Iraq - an observation.

I do understand that the situations are different - for instance, terrorists actually were in Lebanon prior to Israel's bombings - but I've noticed something oddly out of place on DU.

When someone defends the killing of innocent people in Lebanon, they point out the killings of Israeli civilians, as if the people killed in Lebanon are directly responsible since they live in the same country that Hizbollah is operating from.

I've not seen any posts about Iraq from the people defending the seemingly indiscriminate attacks (and I also understand that in a war it's difficult not to kill civilians), so it's possible they aren't hypocrites.

However, in the posts that say things like "When we have suicide bombings in Israel, neer a bleep in the world press, and many of those victims are babies... when a Lebanese kid is killed, we have the world screaming," something jumps out at me:

If you replace "Lebanon" with "Iraq" and "Israel" with "U.S." or "Bush," you have some nice Sean Hannity-style quotes.

And don't even get me started on the people who imply (or flat-out say) that if you are critical of Israel then you either are a member of Hizbollah or you want to marry someone who is. Just like the right-wingers who say if you oppose the "commander-in-chief" you are Al-Qaeda.

I won't call the posters hypocrites without knowing their positions on the Iraq war. If they're consistent, then I can disagree without being disgusted with their mendacity.
