Drill instructors bring Parris Island to Ohio

<snip>It was the annual field meet, and nearly 200 future Marines from across Ohio competed against one another in teams. The "poolees," called that because they’re from the recruitment pool, are delayed-entry recruits either newly graduated from high school or still in school. snip

"It’s amazing. It gives you a perspective of what they are going to be doing," said 42-year-old Lori Nelson, of Canal Winchester.

Her 17-year-old son, Morgan Penn, graduated from Canal Winchester High School and is scheduled to leave for Parris Island Aug. 7.

Does she worry?

"Of course, I worry a lot. But he fought to get in, and my philosophy is that I have a good faith in God. I pray he’ll come back if he has to go over."

1. "You'll be Sorrrrrryyy!"
Shouted at me by marines when I entered boot camp.

They were certainly right.

2. Lori reminds me of my own mother
My mother is religious and would also have been proud of me wanting to become a Marine at 17.

Only problem is I can remember my mother and father doing everything they could do to help my older brother get draft deferment after draft deferment to avoid Vietnam. And encouraged him to do so.

I wasn't my mother and and fathers favorite son.

5. It's NOT boot camp...
it's jive shit for the moms.

This pisses me off soooo bad. What a brave mom.... she's OK with her son perhaps suffering and dying. How brave of her... with somebody else's life!

The kid's gonna find out from his DI that "Yer heart may belong to Mama, yer soul may belong to Jeezus, but yer ass belongs to the Corps!"
