So we wanted Syria out of Lebanon?
How smart was that?

Juan Cole asks the question too: The Nation points to the illogic of the Bush administration in having pushed Syria out of Lebanon and now demanding that it rein in Hizbullah. If Syria has been reduced to having almost no influence in Lebanon, how exactly would it do that?

2. It's about time someone brings that up.
Didn't Bush all but back the Hezbullah during that incident. I found it odd at the time that we were fighting "The War On Terror", and helping a terrorist group. Looks like it payed of well.........

3. I don't see the logic.
Syria is providing the militant Palestinians with money and arms (including the longer range rockets), and you think that it would be a good thing to have Syria in Lebanon?

4. Baloney.
Syria was keeping Hezbollah pretty much in check when they were IN Lebanon. Once they left, Hezbollah began to get active again. It actually was a good thing to have the Syrians in Lebanon, at least until the Lebanese could get a means to police their own territory.

5. Hell, we want the Lebanese out of Lebanon and....
the Syrians out of Syria and the Palastinians out of Palastine and.....well you know. We want it all for ourselves except those that can wait on us.

6. Syria and Hezbollah should both get their asses out of Lebanon
They've destroyed enough of that country. It's time they leave Lebanon to the Lebanese. If it takes some Israeli bombs to drive them out, then so be it.

7. If Syria were still there
but agreed to an orderly longer timetable, not the run out of town exodus that occurred, this probably could have been avoided.

8. Cole's right. It's just like asking how the
US could possibly have had any influence over the Nicaraguan contras, since the US military pulled out of the country long before. How smart was that?

Since the US had been reduced to having almost no influence in Nicaragua, how exactly could it have had any influence on the contras?

Sounds damned silly, doesn't it?

Mostly because his basic premise is wrong: Syria has not been reduced to having almost no influence in Lebanon, as long as Hezbollah, a Syria supporter and sometimes-proxy, can cow the government.
